June 29-July 5: The Week In Michael Jackson News

Posted Fri Jul 3, 2009 2:26pm PDT by Lyndsey Parker in That's Really Week

Last week, arguably the biggest music story of at least the last decade broke, causing the emotional meltdown of millions of fans and the almost literal meltdown of the Internet itself: the sudden death of the King Of Pop, Michael Jackson, at age 50 from a cardiac arrest. As a result, for the first time in this blog's history, That's Really Week went on hiatus. It seemed like the respectful thing to do. All the other stories we'd been planning to write about--the Perez Hilton/will.i.am smackdown, Chris Brown's plea bargain, Adam Lambert's unauthorized pre-Idol album--all seemed so very trivial and uninteresting in light of the Jackson tragedy.

But now we're back to business as usual, although in another That's Really Week first, all the top stories in this post are about a single artist, the late Michael, who continued to completely dominate the headlines this week. Jackson's crazy life in the spotlight had always been a circus--from the urban legends about Elephant Man bones, oxygen sleeping tents, chimpanzees, and prosthetic noses, to numerous legal scandals and financial woes--and his death has been no different, as all sorts of sad and bizarre stories have come to light.

Of course, the most troubling stories have centered around the exact cause of Michael's death at such a young age--most notably allegations of his drug abuse, and how he might have obtained potentially life-threatening narcotics. This week an anesthetic used in operating rooms to induce unconsciousness, a sedative called Diprivan or Propofol, was found in Michael's home, and authorities are still investigating allegations that singer had been subsisting on a drug diet of multiple painkillers, sedatives, and antidepressants before his death. Furthermore, Los Angeles police were told that Michael was given an injection of Demerol just an hour before his demise, but Michael's personal physician, Dr. Conrad Murray (the man who initially found Michael, unconscious and unbreathing, in his bedroom, and tried to perform CPR), has denied via his attorney that he prescribed Michael either Demerol or OxyContin. Dr. Murray has been, according to the LAPD, "cooperative" in the ongoing investigation, and is not a suspect.

As of this writing, it is still unclear was actually caused Michael to go into cardiac arrest. Two autopsies have been conducted--the second one at the request of the Jackson family--but conclusive results are not expected for several weeks.

Another one of the biggest concerns after the shock of Michael's unexpected passing has been what will become of his three orphaned children: 12-year-old son Prince, 11-year-old daughter Paris, and 7-year-old son Prince II, aka Blanket. Michael's ex-wife, Debbie Rowe, is the biological mother of the elder two children (the mother of Blanket, who was conceived via a surrogate, has never been revealed), but she reportedly signed away her rights years ago after she and Michael divorced. Thus, Michael's will bestowed custody of the three children to his beloved mother, Katherine Jackson, with his longtime friend/Motown labelmate Diana Ross named as Katherine's successor if necessary. Katherine was granted temporary guardianship of Michael's offspring this past Monday, but now Debbie is claiming that Michael was not the biological father of Prince I and Paris, and that in fact they were sired by Arnold Klein, Michael's dermatologist and Debbie's former boss.

As of this writing, it is still unclear whether Debbie will seek custody of Prince I and Paris. Her attorney, Eric M. George, stated: "The truth is that Debbie has not reached a final decision concerning the pending custody proceedings. When Debbie does take a position in the public forum of the court, those positions will of course be conveyed to all interested persons." A rescheduled guardianship hearing is set for July 13.

Meanwhile, Michael's first wife, Lisa Marie Presley, spoke out touchingly--and chillingly--about her late husband, once and for all quashing any rumors that their marriage was a publicity stunt to polish up Michael's post-child-molestation-scandal image. "I am going to say now what I have never said before because I want the truth out there for once," she blogged from the heart on her MySpace page. "Our relationship was not 'a sham' as is being reported in the press. It was an unusual relationship yes, where two unusual people who did not live or know a 'normal life' found a connection, perhaps with some suspect timing on his part. Nonetheless, I do believe he loved me as much as he could love anyone and I loved him very much. I wanted to 'save him,' I wanted to save him from the inevitable which is what has just happened. His family and his loved ones also wanted to save him from this as well but didn't know how and this was 14 years ago. We all worried that this would be the outcome then."

Lisa Marie also disturbingly revealed that Michael had predicted he would die young and tragically, just like her equally iconic father, another "King," Elvis Presley.

Additionally, another issue on Michael fans' minds has been what sort of public memorial service will be held in the King Of Pop's honor. Many tributes have taken place already--from unofficial vigils at the Motown studio, the Apollo Theater, Michael's star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame, and his Neverland Ranch home; to numerous televised tributes, including a totally retooled, Jackson-centric BET Awards ceremony last Sunday night; to a group dance organized by the same Filipino inmates behind 2007's viral-video "Thriller" prison dance.

At first it was believed that there would be an official public memorial/viewing at Neverland, but it has since been announced that a giant ceremony will be held next Tuesday morning at downtown L.A.'s Staples Center--with 17,500 free tickets (11,000 for the Staples Center and 6,500 for the adjacent Nokia Theatre) provided to the public, plus a free worldwide video feed. The online scramble to secure tickets this week caused the Internet to practically break down once again, and although no other details have been provided, the memorial is certain to be a massive production.

Speaking of massive productions, Michael died only two weeks before he was set to begin his 50-date "This Is It" comeback concert residency at the O2 Arena in London. While those shows, which would have kicked off July 13, will sadly never happen now, video of one of his final rehearsals was released by AEG Live to news outlets his week. In the footage--shot live at the Staples Center, ironically now the site of his aforementioned Tuesday memorial--Michael seemed healthy, dancing energetically while performing a medley of his hits. There is now talk that a full-length video of this rehearsal will be released commercially on DVD, as it was, for all purposes, his historical last performance. Meanwhile, O2 concert promoters at AEG Live are offering full ticket refunds for the O2 concerts, although there are rumors that some of the O2 dates will be turned into Michael tribute shows starring everyone and anyone from a reunited Abba to obvious Jackson disciple Justin Timberlake.

And finally, while Michael Jackson is gone, clearly his music lives on. While it has been revealed that he was working on two albums at the time of his passing and that the results of those recording sessions could be released from the vaults in the future, the public's appetite for his classic, timeless material has become absolutely voracious in the days since his death. After dying, Michael became the first artist to sell more than 1 million song downloads in one week (he far exceeded that total, running up a tally of 2.6 million); he became the first artist in history to have a catalog album outsell the week's #1 current album); he had an unprecedented 50 songs on the Top 200 Hot Digital Songs chart; and he charted a record nine of the top 10 albums on the Top Catalog Albums chart. Obviously Michael is still the King Of Pop, and his music will continue to fill dancefloors and iPods for decades.

And on that bittersweet note, thus concludes the most unusual entry in this column's HIStory. Michael will surely continue to make big after-death headlines in the weeks to come, so continue checking back for more updates on his memorial, autopsy, custody battle, posthumous recordings, etc.

Thoughts and prayers goes out to the jackson family most of all his kids. Lets give them some space, lets not talk about his drugs abuse etc. His children doesn't need to see this from the media he was their father. I understand Michael was an icon great singer etc. However we did lose another star that day(Farrah Fawcett)i don't see anyone remembering her the fact that she was fighting cancer and she was well loved.Have a heart people. Michael is gone to a better place let's move on

I am so sorry to hear what happened to M.J. They played the videos that they want us to remember him for, but they forgot 1. They kept playing it in 2002. It was about a group of people coming to his house, (rumors I guess) but they gathered to see. He invited them in and Ghosts appeared and proformed, the Children had no fear. One man egged the people to be mean again to the man that they now found entertianing. The song Threatened was sung. It was about indifferances a bit before it's time but always so M.J. on time. I believe it played on VH-1.Can you send me a copy of that video or have them play it so I can have it for my Grands to understand about how Life is. Thank you all Very Much and May The Lord Thy God be with The Jacksons and everyone. nananay55

Yeah, well you all can rave about what a great person MJ was, but you seem to forget that he was a pedophile and child molester. I stopped listening to his music years ago when this was revealed. I read the article comparing him to Elvis.... in that people chose to overlook MJ's dark side just like they did Elvis.... well I'm here to tell you that at least Elvis was no child molester and the drugs he was taking were prescription drugs prescribed by his doctor. You all can go on and on about what a great person MJ was if you want to, but he had a twisted, sick perception. What if it had been your child that he molested? Would you still think he was the greatest thing that ever walked the face of the earth? I think the media is making too big a deal of his death. He even overshadowed Farrah Faucet's passing. And she was at least a wonderful person. As far as his children are concerned, he was not the biological father of any of them... he never had sex with a woman..... only children. And he wanted to be white.... why do you think he bleached his skin and had surgery on his nose to get rid of the
African American look? Do you all still think he's the greatest thing that ever lived? I liked him up until it was discovered he was a child molester. He makes me sick at my stomach!!!! You all should be ashamed to place a child molester on a pedastal like that. Maybe our country should not even put any of the child molesters in jail and just let them walk the streets and give them a slap on the back for having sex with children. His family should request a private ceremony and not televise it. I know I don't want it interupting my regular t.v. programs, because he was not that important..... no child molester is important enough to to have his funeral publicized and televised.

I think of the reminder that says "what does it profit a man if he gain the whole world and in the end suffers the loss of his soul." Nothing can compare with your soul and there is something wonderful prepared for those who love God and live according to His precepts. In the 1930's Jesus appeared to a young nun in Poland named Faustina and told her to tell the world aboujt the ocean of His mercy and that the greater a person's sin the more that person had a right to His Mercy. I pray that Michael's soul be plunged into the Mercy of God's love.

Message from Angel of Michael Jackson

Talking on behalf of WHITE people that love and admire Michael Jackson deeply from all over the world. He was a gentle, sensitive, and loving soul who carried God's message of Great Love to all people. “Love is the answer...”as he sings.
Humanitarian, who wanted “change the world, make it better place, for you and for me and entire human race...” He did everything he could for others and money were not important to him, and he wanted to be loved in return.

It is WRONG to accuse him off anything that he never did. It is really LOW for anyone to criticize his eccentricity or personal style. This is supposed to be a FREE country for EVERYONE. He deserves to do anything he wants with his money, or looks, or even his health, as long as he is not hurting anyone else. And he never did anything bad to others.

All of you EVIL critics and accusers, on the other hand, did the damage to the life of this wonderful man. Someone paid this troubled doctor to come all the way to California, to give a large amount of the hospital drug to Michael, and to finish this dirty work on the bed by suffocating the Star with the pillow while he was already unconscious, then run away for cover and pay to a nurse to back up the lie with the “story” of Michael begging her for drugs. Michael been slim all his life, never had a drug rehab, or history of heart attacks. He did not gain weight like Elvis did on drugs. He planned to come back and has no reasons to feel down. While there are plenty of jealous people who would not want to see him rise again and would do anything to stop him. Because they were not able to ruin him completely with the false accusations of child molestation, they decided to kill him before he shine again. Everyone knows that even Jesus had enemies that crucified him too, no matter how good and innocent he was.

Unlike Evil people that usually busy criticizing and blaming others for everything, Micheal, with his soul of an Angel, called for change starting withing himself. “Starting with the man in the mirror..” This is what Creator of the world wants you to do, and He does not care if you BLACK or WHITE!

You know now what is going to happen to you! The God will not let cruel and arrogant people just to get away with it. Wait and watch! In fact it is already happening, the world full of EVIL and JEALOUSY and GREED is collapsing already. Only truly good and hardworking people will be able to escape the great impact and will turn their lives around for better with the love for Michael and for other great people in their hearts. Good people that been killed by Evil of others. We have them always with us as a part of human History. Everyones life is precious, and especially such a great talent that only born once in many generations. It should be greatly treasured!
I AM CALLING FOR ALL ANGELS TO RISE AND TO DESTROY THE EVIL ON THIS PLANET !!!

TRIBUTE TO MICHAEL J
Rest in peace
Michael J
Why did you have to go away
So soon
On that particular day
Just was going to be an ordinary day
But the skies opened up
And took you away
You were a part of my life
For almost as long as I can remember
But I remember before your flame burned bright
It was like a cold and unstarry night
And when your small flame began burning it
Brightened up that sky
And made the world a better place
With you in it
You rose like the sunny day
Took all of our breath away
With your breathless singing
Your miracle dancing
And your star grew into a planet and
Burned brighter like the sun
With Billie Jean and Bad
And Dangerous
You led the way with
We are the world
And forced us all to take a look
At the man in the mirror
The words you wrote read
Like a book
A book of love sent from up above
Yet trouble dogged you
And you flew to other nations
Seeking a spot of peace
Just a little place where
You could lay your head
And now you are dead
The term the world uses for the body
That breathes no more
But like you said—your work
Is your soul
And your soul will go on and on
And like the dawn keeping rising
And like the star keep shining
And like a dream you will still be living in all of our hearts

Michael has always been a person with a heart full of love that he gave to people who needed it or wanted it. In my case I needed both. He was a person of different colors and made you feel good of what color a person was. His music made you feel of all colors. I know he was put on this earth to some of gods work thru all of us. His true fans never beileive the garbage the media made of him, we all knew who he was and the work that was given for him to do while on earth.

This is a sad time for thoses children that, are paid for with money because , he was famous and the sad thing are the mothers of this ill begotten thoughtless adults to do such a destructive soul tie to these kids, I'm sure the empitiness will always be there and as for Caloifornia why would you bother cover such a Holywood drama knowing it would have put you in debt and then expect a dead man to pay for a debt,Like he hadn't paid enough when he went through the california courts to be belittled and raped of his privacy and yet he walked free but state liened there pockets and for those who were close to him ,Micheal was a plaugue were was you'r support or your face be taken next to his?, How sad this world is and most of all He sang a song on one world goverment love!.That is even sadder because ,America is having promblems with foriengners coming into this country and have no clue how to act behave or respect Americans. Forigners bring there barberic Ideas to this country and simple destroy what American vaules are. Hats off to Micheal fo having world wide vision for others yet he will not be here to live it...

How sad the world is now. I was born and still live in Australia the same year as Michael and actually grew up on his music. It was during the Thriller and Dangerous years i had a son and I named him Michael after MJ. As my son grew we danced and sang Michael 's songs and music. Never once did we believe in any of those dreadful things about you, it was just people wanting to make alot of money from him. Today we are still huge fans and deeply grieve at his passing. Michael thank you for your music and thank you for sharing so much of yourself. May you now find the peace and serenity you so sought. We are fans for life. xxxxxxxxxxx
