Weiland Vs. Cornell: This Time, It's Personal

Posted Fri Oct 31, 2008 12:18pm PDT by Lyndsey Parker in Video Ga Ga

A few years ago, supergroups were all the rage.

For instance, former shirtless Soundgarden hunk Chris Cornell had joined forces with three-fourths of Rage Against The Machine in a band called Audioslave. And the guy who was saying "no no no" to rehab long before Amy Winehouse made such resistance fashionable, oft-arrested Stone Temple Pilot burnout Scott Weiland, had stepped into the abandoned Axl Rose role with ousted Guns N' Roses members Slash, Duff, and Matt. Meanwhile, short-lived GNR member Gilby Clarke was biding time with the short-lived TV supergroup Rock Star Supernova (featuring Motley Crue's Tommy Lee and Metallica's Jason Newsted); the non-Weiland member of Stone Temple Pilots had formed Army Of Anyone with Filter's Richard Patrick; and even the White Stripes' Jack White had assembled the Raconteurs with some of his Detroit indie-rock buddies. But super-est of the supergroups were definitely, totally Audioslave and Velvet Revolver.

But then, just as simultaneously as Audioslave and Velvet Revolver exploded, they concurrently imploded.

Audioslave broke up, and Rage Against The Machine reformed to rage once more (perhaps they--and Rage's fans--were frustrated that Audioslave sounded pretty much nothing like RATM), while Chris Cornell made a re-attempt at a solo career that completely tanked despite his recording a James Bond theme and getting props from American Idol champion David Cook. Now, for his third make-or-break solo album, Scream, Chris has resorted to recruiting the fix-it man hired by everyone hoping for a career makeover, superproducer Timbaland. Yes, Timbaland.

Scott Weiland, in turn, left Velvet Revolver and as of this writing has yet to be replaced (dare we suggest a season of Rock Star: Velvet Revolver to solve that problem?). His ex-STP bandmates swiftly abandoned the aforementioned Army Of Anyone to jump on the reunion bandwagon, but the regrouped Pilots have yet to record any new material. So now Scott too has resumed his solo career, recording his first one-man album since 1998's Bowie-ish, critically heralded but otherwise ignored 12 Bar Blues. This second, equally Bowie-ish solo effort (out next month) is titled Happy In Galoshes. It is not produced by Timbaland.

Sadly, neither of these supergroup splits have resulted in a Soundgarden reunion or a reinstatement of the original Guns N' Roses lineup. But they have resulted in a new Weiland-versus-Cornell video battle. Which singer, Scott or Chris, has a better chance of going it alone? Watch their new solo videos here and decide for yourself.

Omgchris cornell what are you thinking you was with soundgarden which was a great band and then went to audioslave and sucked now you are trying this rap thing and you suck even worse.get back to rocking you have a great voice and you are wasting it.please would some band come out and just put a cd out that is worth buying.

5. Eric -

Only through an act of sheer will did I manage to listen to that Cornell song. I can't believe that's the same guy who wailed his way through great songs like "Jesus Christ Pose" and "Outshined" Man that's just ridicukous and goes against everything Soundgarden stood for.

The guy's voice isn't what it used to be but I don't think he needed to go in a completley new musical direction. I mean I don't hear any of the "true" Chris Cornell in there. He's now offically a sellout in my book. Thank goodness the Soundgarden albumns are still out there or else new fans would just consider him another shallow pop artist.

Well, Chris Cornell has always had the best rock voice of our time, but what the hell was that?

I've always had a soft spot for Scott Weiland--he seems like such a throwback kind of rock star, drug problems and all.

I thought Weiland's song was decent. It reminded me of STP's misunderstood but pretty great "Tiny Music, Songs from..."

Unfortunately, Cornell's stuff will probably do better because of the Timbaland connection.

There are rock stars and there good singers. Cornell is a good singer, but Scott is a rock star who is also a good singer which is a rare combination.

However, both need to re-evalute their careers and get back to what they were good at because both of these songs SUCK

So we have Weiland trying to be David Bowie, and Cornell trying to be everyone else mainstream.

Weiland's core fans will definitely be more accepting of his offering than Cornell's core fan base, but the pop addicts will eat up Cornell's song. Timbaland did it, that means the woolen masses must love it.

For my dollar, they both suck and I'll stick with my STP and Soundgarden albums.

I do a college radio show in Reno and I've been wanting to do a "Remember when they didn't suck" hour. Now I'll definitely need to add Chris Cornell and Scott Weiland to the list with Metallica, Korn, Incubus, and oh so many more.

i dont care who is a better singer. they both are intense singers with incredible stage presence. what i do care about is the fact that they would rather do solo albums then get back to where they belong. Chris, for the love of God/Budha/Zeus/Whoever the hell- get
soundgarden back together and stop w/the career suicide nonsense. it is a long over due reunion and there is no time better than now. if STP and rage against the machine and the pixies and the police and blind melon and alice and chains and even van f@#kin halen can do it, then gdi so can you! put your vocals back where they belong PLEASE!

As a singer and songwriter I can understand what chris is trying to do. Just because you rocked out during grunge doesnt mesn you dont enjoy other music and sounds. Each artist has more than what the public hears on the radio inside their musical hearts. But this is CRAP! Plain and simple..Timbaland? Get a grip! As a huge Chris fan, i really enjoyed his 1st Solo album, it was a moving soulful display of emotion. The second solo was not quite as good. I bought them both on they day they were released and listened for months.Who knows if I'lll be able to stomach this new album after hearing this...Watch out? As for Weiland, dude has 9 lives. His solo stuff sounds like everything else hes done, no surprises here. Still, Chris needs to seclude himself in a cabin in the woods again and get back to what HE does best and not let someone else steer his music, aka Audioslave sucked wind!! As does timbaland.

12. Matt -
well, you all tried to warn me, but I just had to go ahead and watch Chris' video... I want that 3 minutes back... how the mighty have fallen...

STP, soungarden did really rocked back then ... Audioslave and velvet revolver still rocked but not as great! I am a big fan of both Chris and Scott (heck, I bought all their albums from all their previous bands and including their solo albums)... the videos shown were disappointing I must admit... but still, I have faith in both men and will still support and buy their next albums!! .. and will probably just leave more comments (good or bad) after I've bought them...... I'm a fan of both and I know I'm not alone out here

Okay. As a former youth of the Grunge 90's I loved Stone Temp and Sound. I know that artists like to try NEW things and sometimes they work and Most times they don't. Out of the 2, Chris' was the better one. But I believe they both jumped the shark on this one. It's great that Scott cleaned up his act and YES DRUGS are BAD but sometimes the affects of drugs makes better music. Sorry guys. I'll probably itune the albums anyway :)

15. AK -
chris has lost his mind and scott did very well!

16. Joe S -
BOTH VIDEOS STINK ON ICE!!

17. tommy boy -
oh my god... both of these stuck... chris's just stunk worse... like we were on an amusement ride through the sewer... damn it! come on, what is this trash!? what kind of rockers are you guys anyway? it's bad enough these crap rappers exist, but why do guys with great voices sell out with this trash!? i mean honestly!? sigh... why?... and NO i'm not buying these albums because i really hope they do soooooo BADLY that they never try to sell us this crap ever again! STP and Soundgarden! THAT'S WHAT WE WANT!!! MAKE IT HAPPEN!

18. Bradleigh H -
Back to the old drawing board for both of them. Neither one of them gets my seal of approval.

19. MoNa -
Chris Cornell's "Euphoria Morning" is one of my favorite albums ever. I love him solo, but this is just not who Chris really is. Maybe he's going through a midlife crisis.

I've never liked Weiland, so I really couldn't care less.

20. Jessica -
I was an old school STP and Sound fan so I had to hear both. I haven't really followed either in recent years. I was generally intrigued by Scotts single. I liked it. I thought that Chris' was too simple, too commercial, too pop-y.
