Eels' Super Bowl Ad: Blink And You Miss It

Posted Mon Feb 4, 2008 3:02pm PST by Lyndsey Parker in Video Ga Ga

Armchair athletes might be gathering around the watercooler this post-Super Bowl morning to gab about Tom Petty's halftime show or Justin Timberlake's hilarious Pepsi commercial. But sadly, there's one Super Bowl-affiliated advert artist that most viewers probably overlooked: The Eels.

Yes, lost in the shuffle amid all the megamillion-dollar commercials and A-list performers was Mark E. Everett's acclaimed indie band and their lo-fi commercial for the new rarities compilation, Useless Trinkets. And it's understandable why most people can't remember the Eels' ad, since it was in fact only one second long--the shortest commercial in Super Bowl broadcast history.

See, Super Bowl commercials don't come cheap--they cost $100,000 a second. Indie bands can't afford that! So the Eels simply scraped together the minimum $100K and bought their own little blip on the Super Bowl screen. True subliminal marketing genius.

If you missed it--and let's face it, who didn't?--here's that ad again. Now watch closely, everyone:

Was the Eels' money well-spent? Or was this Useless Trinkets ad actually useless? Let us know on the message board below.

Brilliant historic move.
It only adds to his mystique, one which you can't put a price tag on! You might consider in this "tivo" era the multiple viewings this ad gets! Bravo!

I agree, it's totally brilliant. Even if you didn't see the at the time cuz it was so short, people are writing about it now - giving the Eels more attention than they've had in years. The Eels are geniuses!

$100,000 for the publicity this will receive is actually a pretty good deal

Now that it's on the internet, it will make it worth while.
