New Gnarls Barkley Video: Too Gnarly For TV?

Posted Thu Mar 6, 2008 4:05pm PST by Lyndsey Parker in Video Ga Ga

Much ado has been made about "Run," the totally awesome new '80s-style video by Gnarls Barkley.

Now, you'd think all the fuss would be about Justin Timberlake's star turn as a Jheri-Curled, Thriller-jacketed dance show host, a comedic performance every bit as hilarious as any of his skits on SNL.

But instead, it's because MTV has banned the vid from its rotation.

These days, most hip-hop clips get vetoed by the MTV powers-that-be for sex and swear words. But oddly, "Run" is getting the runaround because its retro strobe effects--which (you have been warned) kick in around the 2:15 mark--allegedly have the potential to induce Pokemon-style seizures.

Anyway, watch the band's banned video below, if you dare, and judge for yourself. (Yahoo! takes no responsibility for any resultant negative reactions, whether "Run" gives you a seizure or, you know, you just plain don't dig it.)

Justin is hysterical in this. I might have a seizure - from laughing so hard.

I think it is ridiculus that MTV banned this video. There is nothing wrong with it. They have played far worse video's on MTV. Whoever is in charge of whatever on MTV needs to rethink it. I stopped watching it when the only shows that were on were stupid ones that are nothing about music. I just think MTV should change it's name. It's not music television and hasn't been for a long time. So it is certainly time for a name change.

wow seriousely that stripy part is really trippy if you just focus on the movement....
lol i got a lil dizzy for a second there...

I haven't turned MTV on in forever because there is never any actual music on it. Now i hear this... *sigh*

If a video like this gives you a seizure, chalk it up to population control! Come on MTV, look in you archives - like from when you actually played music!

It's banned because the colors and lights could potentially cause seizures. Like that Pokemon episode in Japan a few years back. TV stations are regulated by the government to not show certain light/color flashes that can cause seizures in people. That's why there are also warnings in every videogame manual also.

why was that banned?!

There is absolutely nothing wrong with this video. MTV is ridiculous and I can't believe it has become an issue in the news. We are at war people we have far better things to do. Now, has anyone been hurt or has anyone had a seizure as the direct result of this video?

LOVE IT!

Awesome song, awesome video. Shame on MTV for banning it. Their loss, not gnarls barkley.

The video was very entertaining! But, I could see the problem with the strobe effects and the the stripes possibly causing epileptic seizures.

gorgeous, hilarious, brilliant; more fantasticness from the geniuses that are gnarls. whoever directed this video should get an award.

the song's pretty great, too.

MTV hasn't been about music videos for years!

it was great, but my mom does have seizures, something like that could set off an epilectic. They could put a warning on it or CGI all the lights and checker boards out. It's a shame more people can't see it, but mtv is right. Flashing lights are a main cause of seizers.
