Scarlett Johansson: Please No Lindsay Lohan Comparisons

Posted Tue Apr 29, 2008 3:30pm PDT by Billy Johnson, Jr. in Video Ga Ga

Isn't Lindsay Lohan's "Rumors" song and video exactly what you expected when you heard that the then teenage actress was planning to release a pop record? It was full of paparazzi angst, hip hop choreography and drum machine effects. It made you think Britney as did Paris Hilton's "Stars Are Blind."

These tabloid darlings clearly didn't give the impression that they intended for anyone to take them seriously. Mission accomplished.

Equally as beautiful, though an acclaimed actress, Scarlett Johansson shows them how it's supposed to be done with her May 20 singing debut, Anywhere I Lay My Head, for which she sings 10 Tom Waits covers and one original song.

Ironically, the Y! Music video premiere for the first single "Falling Down" can be compared to Lohan's "Rumors." While in "Rumors" Lohan complains about the annoyances of celebreality, Johansson offers another perspective. The day-in-the-life themed video follows Johansson being chauffeured to work, seemingly in deep thought as she looks at passerby. She arrives to the set to get her hair and makeup done and dressed by stylists. Her handlers brief her on the day's tasks.

Her expression is welcoming and pleasant, but she isn't completely engaged. Maybe she's tired or would simply rather be doing something else, an emotion probably not all too different than the one underneath Lohan's "Rumors." But it's also the underling story of "Falling Down," that things aren't always what they seem, you often have to do exactly what you don't want to do, and sometimes as things fall apart there's nothing you can do but watch.

When Johansson is finished working, she strips off the make up and heads back home. She is greeted by fans, and appears to return to the deep thought. There's definitely a lot on her mind.

Clearly, there's a lot more depth to her music effort than what you expect from a hot, young actress turned singer who happened to portray a salacious video vixen to Justin Timberlake last year in his 9-minute, Cameron Diaz breakup prequel "What Goes Around...Comes Around."

Johansson's music video is as artistic as her Golden Globe nominated work, Lost In Translation, Girl With A Pearl Earring, A Love Song For Bobby Long and Match Point.

The fact that she both acts and sings is the beginning and end of her comparisons to Lohan. Johansson won't be dismissed as a joke.

I'm still undecided on this one. I like that it's not the usual actress-turned-singer pop stuff, but it's really hard to tell if she can sing at all. It could be that she just doesn't have much range or it's the fact that she's covering Tom Waits who isn't exactly known for his singing range either.

That was a horrible song to debut with. She might be a good singer.... however I wasn't able to tell because "Falling Down" is just a painfully bad song.

OMG that was awful beyond belief.

I have to say don't quit your day job i am so sick and tired of seeing actresses or actors thinking they can sing seriously we are tired of this pain on our ears. Do us a favor do what you do best buy acting and stay to that. Your bored with your job then stay at home don't try to sing and bore us to tears. I hate it with a passion

I'd hoped for something better...she's a pretty girl and seems very nice, likable, down to earth and Lindsey Lohan/Paris Hilton are definitely not even close to being in the same league with her...so I really really really wanted to LIKE this....but her singing is really bad.....maybe it was just this song...maybe it was just flat....I'm not going to rule her out yet...but I do hope this was just a fluke because I'd like to see her succeed.....

horrible!!!!

She's awesome, it shows another side of her, I love her different sound.

I liked it. Good voice, and keeping in mind that she's only 23, it'll get better as it gets stronger. I'd buy it.

Sounds good to me. I guess people don't know how to act if a million people don't tell them what to like. It makes you uncomfortable to be out there alone, standing up for your own tastes in music.

i like her voice. at first i was like wtf? but after listening to it for a while it sounded really beautiful to me, like out of the ordinary and mellow.

DEAR GOD, Scarlett CANNOT SING. The video was cool though. It actually reminded me of the movie she was in called Lost In Translation, it had that feel and sound to it. That is one of my favorite flicks. Anyway, i think it's a good effort, but MAN she CANNOT sing! It's very flat, monotone and amateurish. Oh well, that's my 2 cents worth.

This article seems like it came straight from her publicist. Trying to head off the likely comparisons to the other "actresses" who try to sing. Scarlett should be happy she has enjoyed such sucess as an actress, because her musical talent does not show up in this song. I'm old school, I don't care what the video looks like if the song and singer's voice fall flat.

i have to be honest girl stick to acting and no more singing

56. tina -
dat was just horrible, she can't sing for jack. she needs 2 stick wit acting cos singing definitely aint her

57. Paul Maher Jr. -
hmmm, I like it.

58. jamie -
her music is plausible.
however, i wish we didn't have to follow her to work...

59. Mali -
not a very good singer.. blah blah.. yup stick with acting..

I think whoever decided to use this song to launch the album...didn't really make a great decision. you can't hear how truly beautiful her voice is because it's so trampled on by the instrumentals and voice filters.
FOLKS: look for her version of the classic "Summertime." She honestly does a wonderful, jazzy job with it. It honestly made me jealous to listen to because i realized this girl can do everything!
