Scarlett Johansson: Please No Lindsay Lohan Comparisons

Posted Tue Apr 29, 2008 3:30pm PDT by Billy Johnson, Jr. in Video Ga Ga

Isn't Lindsay Lohan's "Rumors" song and video exactly what you expected when you heard that the then teenage actress was planning to release a pop record? It was full of paparazzi angst, hip hop choreography and drum machine effects. It made you think Britney as did Paris Hilton's "Stars Are Blind."

These tabloid darlings clearly didn't give the impression that they intended for anyone to take them seriously. Mission accomplished.

Equally as beautiful, though an acclaimed actress, Scarlett Johansson shows them how it's supposed to be done with her May 20 singing debut, Anywhere I Lay My Head, for which she sings 10 Tom Waits covers and one original song.

Ironically, the Y! Music video premiere for the first single "Falling Down" can be compared to Lohan's "Rumors." While in "Rumors" Lohan complains about the annoyances of celebreality, Johansson offers another perspective. The day-in-the-life themed video follows Johansson being chauffeured to work, seemingly in deep thought as she looks at passerby. She arrives to the set to get her hair and makeup done and dressed by stylists. Her handlers brief her on the day's tasks.

Her expression is welcoming and pleasant, but she isn't completely engaged. Maybe she's tired or would simply rather be doing something else, an emotion probably not all too different than the one underneath Lohan's "Rumors." But it's also the underling story of "Falling Down," that things aren't always what they seem, you often have to do exactly what you don't want to do, and sometimes as things fall apart there's nothing you can do but watch.

When Johansson is finished working, she strips off the make up and heads back home. She is greeted by fans, and appears to return to the deep thought. There's definitely a lot on her mind.

Clearly, there's a lot more depth to her music effort than what you expect from a hot, young actress turned singer who happened to portray a salacious video vixen to Justin Timberlake last year in his 9-minute, Cameron Diaz breakup prequel "What Goes Around...Comes Around."

Johansson's music video is as artistic as her Golden Globe nominated work, Lost In Translation, Girl With A Pearl Earring, A Love Song For Bobby Long and Match Point.

The fact that she both acts and sings is the beginning and end of her comparisons to Lohan. Johansson won't be dismissed as a joke.

Not the voice of an angel, but who'd want that? Dime a dozen. I'd take a single Nico over any ten thousand Enyas. Any day. And Scarlett Johansson? I'd take a quarter of her over any ten million Lindsay Lohans. *u** it. I'll get the album. It sounds right.

I love how this review is mainly about her effin video. OK i get it, it's good. But let's get down to business--she's trying to be a singer, which clearly she is not. She's a great actress, one of my favorite. But that's it.

The only reason I watched this was because I was hoping for some skin, or a punchline. I thought it was a joke.

it's not bad at all and it absolutely blows anything out of the water that lindsey lohan or paris hilton could ever do. and scarlett is doing an album of tom waits covers, that's awesome she's a fan of him. it's an acquired taste but i'd highly recommend checking him out.

Actually - it is strongly reminiscent of Sinead O'Connor...

i think the song isn't that bad. yes i agree she isn't a very good singer but the music industry is littered with bad singers. i like that she doesn't hide her flaws but almost seems to play with her lack of tone. she seems more of a vocalist. she should rely on lyrics and music. that is where her money is. and think it is much better than other actress turned singers. i like the intimacy of the song and video. i think she could use some work with vocal arrangement and melody.

she needs to stick to acting, my ears are still hurting!!ouch!!!

Eh...I imagined her voice to be higher. It kind of has an indie-quality to it. I like it. It's not my favorite, but it's better than Lohan.

112. Debbie -

STAY WITH THE ACTING, LEAVE THE SINGING UP TO THE PROS.

absolutely the worst video i have ever seen in my life. sorta sounds like courtney love. just a teency bit. she should not quit her day job. she cannot sing. but "A" for effort.

118. Yahoo! Music User -
Seriously!!!! I cannot believe she even has an album out with that horrific voice.......I get she's a beaty but that's all. The girl cannot act and she defenitely cannot sing!!!!

119. Larry -
OMG! I'm bored at this video! What a waste of record time and video production. Don't quit you day job.

Well, I see there are a lot of people who really don't like it. But I believe in being honest. I was expecting the worse when I first saw Yahoo's front page article. So I watched and listened. I must say, I really really liked it. I thought it had great music and liked the overlay of her monotone voice. This doesn't mean I think she can sing, it didn't really display any range, but I did enjoy the song. It also reminded me of Mazzy Star with a melodic hint of Medicine. Anyway, liked the video, really like her as an actress, and truly liked the song. So, away with you, and commence with the egg throwing, lol!!
