Bloc Party Invade The Planet Of The Apes

Posted Fri Jul 18, 2008 12:19pm PDT by Lyndsey Parker in Video Ga Ga

British indie darlings Bloc Party always make amazing music videos. But they've really outdone themselves with their latest, "Mercury."

So, um, how to explain the video concept here? Well, it starts off with a bunch of damn dirty apes--scientist apes, of course--playing a gruesome game of Operation on some sort of lobster/cow monster hybrid.

Then the lobster-cow-man, whose name is apparently "Smith," comes to life, Frankenstein-stylee...and goes to college, marries a cute coed, sires a lobster-cow-baby, climbs up the corporate ladder, runs for public office, becomes a mad (cow) dictator, brainwashes all of America, starts World War III, and ultimately puts the scientist apes (who've been manipulating him via a remote control all along) in charge of Planet Earth.

So yeah, just your typical, everyday music video.

This must've looked great on paper when the director came up with the treatment. How could Bloc Party say no to such a concept? And it's a good thing they didn't, because basically, "Mercury" is the coolest science-vs.-monkey music video since Basement Jaxx's "Where's Your Head At"; it features the best utlilization of costumed cows since Alcazar's "Crying At The Discoteque"; it includes (WARNING TO SQUEAMISH VIEWERS) the most gratuitous use of far-flung, bloodied internal organs since Robbie Williams' "Rock DJ"; and most importantly, it's probably THE greatest unofficial chapter in the Planet Of The Apes saga.

If only Tim Burton's Planet Of The Apes remake with Mark Wahlberg had been this entertaining. So go ape for Bloc Party's "Mercury" now. This $h!t is bananas, literally!:

Love the song but love the vid even more. Very cool concept. I applaud Bloc Party and their vid director (who is a genius, but an odd one at that).

this vid is pretty messed up. It reminds me of that video by the beasty boys were they're captured by a sasquatch. I don't know why?!?
