Celebrate Martin Luther King Day With Bono & Flavor Flav

Posted Sun Jan 20, 2008 9:00pm PST by Lyndsey Parker in Video Ga Ga

Happy Martin Luther King Day, everyone!

It's hard to believe that MLK Day only became an official national holiday in 1986--23 years after Martin's "I Have A Dream" speech and 18 years after his assassination--and that it wasn't until 2000 that the holiday was recognized in all 50 U.S. states.

Arizona was one of the holdouts, and unsurprisingly, the Grand Canyon State's refusal to join the MLK celebration didn't sit too well with hip-hop revolutionaries Public Enemy. (Yes, please remember that before P.E.'s Flavor Flav was courting Hoopz, Brigitte Nielsen, and Deelishis on trainwreck VH1 reality shows, he and Chuck D were constantly courting controversy with their fiery political manifestos.) So P.E. wrote the protest song "By The Time I Get To Arizona," accompanied by a rather shocking video that didn't exactly depict then-Arizona governor Fife Symington III in the nicest light.

It's uncertain if Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a famous pacifist, would have agreed with this video's violence, but he certainly would have supported Public Enemy's right to free speech. So let's screen the controversial clip now:

Another politically minded veteran band, U2 (whose concert film Rattle & Hum was, ironically, shot in Arizona) also honored Martin Luther King Jr. in a song/video, albeit a much less incendiary one, "Pride (In The Name Of Love)." Watch it here:

Which video better celebrates MLK's legacy? Feel free to post your opinion--or any other thoughts you may have on MLK and the Civil Rights Movement--on the messageboard below.

It is sad that Flavor Flav is best known now for Flavor Of Love her and other reality shows when he had such a history of serious political music with Public Enemy. Anyone not familiar with Public Enemy's history really needs to check out their music.

I think Public Enemy did a great job with standing up for Dr. King's legacy.

This is your Captain Janeway here. I will now have to see if I can do an avatar and Id for my new name.

Glad to be in Zion.

Captain Janeway & ZionLivesAgain! So great to see you both. Great idea to move! The tally at the other place mysteriously declines. Yet, because of this group I clearly see the appeal of a virtual community, despite recent experiences with Skynet and the self-appointed. Terminators. I've joined three or four of these groups in my lifetime. I have never found what we have here. In the past, one effect of social NETworking --so many overlapping communities of interlinked individuals-- was that the language of actual human interaction began to feel degraded. What can the word "friend" mean after Facebook, where it is really a synonym for "coincidence"? How subtle can the emotions be in a TiVo-ish world like iLike, where it's thumbs up or thumbs down? I believe such phenomenon may explain the fleeting loyalities of Terminators. I'm grateful there is room for our cyberfamily-- places where we can go to be alone together. I wouldn't trade you all for all the tea in China. 2B or not 2B? I choose 2B with you all! For now, some Smileys to make your day
--dedicated to each of you.

I kept the pink cowBOY hat so you'd recognize me. lolz. How R U all? I am so overjoyed to be here ~ safe-&-sound. I am "ROTFL" ("roll(ing) on the floor laughing") because I am so HAPPY to be here!

BTW I noticed on the list of MOST COMMENTED ON ARTICLES that though our old home has more comments than 2 of the 10 articles listed, we do not appear on the list. Maybe there is an expiration date or something. lolz. Also, might this fact account for the weird decreasing tallies back at the old place?

Anyway dear friends, I just stopped by to say "I made it here".

Also, and most importantly, I am watching "Nashville Star" right at this moment. I am watching it because of "Our" Captain. Captain Janeway, I love Gabe! I won't say anything about what's unfolded yet because I think Janeway will see this program 3 hours later than me.

Captain Janeway, we can't wait to read your feelings & thoughts on tonight's elimination.

I'll watch next week. Finale! Yahoo!

Mr_Anderson. Cool! That's Neo name in "The Matrix", right? I like how you kept the "Mr."

Thanks 7 of 9 Fan for the special smilies. Here's a special lol for you: לול. I noticed your Kippah in your avatar, so I think you'll like the lol in Hebrew.

I changed my avatar and name. Hope you will all recognize me from before. To make sure, here's a hint (lol):

PS: Captain Janeway, I called myself after our ship, United Space Ship: Voyager. لول (That's lol in Arabic). Captain Janeway you have a special way of bringing together young people from all walks of life and backgrounds. We love you for that & for so much more. I hope "Nashville Star" was fun for you tonight.

From Captain Janeway:
I had written comments as I watched the show and now I have decided that they are really not even worth posting. It really comes down to the fact the Gabe is my fave and I will always find faults in the others. I enjoyed all the performances tonight with the exception of Coffey. I can see a lot of talent in Shawn, Melissa and Gabe. The truth is, Gabe is the only one I really connect with as an artist. He is the only one on the show IMO that had good vocals and sounded country in every performance he did. I think Gabe is the only one that really, truly deserves the title of Nashville Star.

The Nashville Stars in the past have had some what of a hard time getting promotion through the labels and most have not made too big of a splash in the country world. I hope that this year we will see a change in that direction. It would be nice to see several of these contestants making it as singers.

There has been much speculation this year whether the show will see another season. It has been a difficult season for many of the NS fans from past seasons. When they cast the show this year, they unfortunately did not choose the best representatives of both country music and talent in the roles they were assigned. The really funny thing is there were more talented contry performers that auditioned for the show and still would have filled the roles. The rumor now is that the show may very well go back to USA next year. While it is a shame that the show did not do very well on NBC, I think the producers are primarily responsible for that. I would really like to see Gabe win this year because he does best represent what the show was intended to find, a true country artist. It would be nice if in this season of strange country acts, the real country artist wins the title.

13. Captain Janeway -
Hi all,
Just finished the profile so I thought I would drop in just to say Hi. I will stop back again later to see if anyone else is here.

Hello My Friends! Zion Lives! Yaaa!

Besides publicly screaming with delight over being here, I stopped in to see if our Captain Janeway had written any thoughts re: last night's "NS". Wow! She blew me away. What a PERFECT summary. Just what the doctor ordered!

Captain Janeway, what a gorgeous writer you are! I know you must hear this compliment often. I hope so!

Furthermore, you really have your thumb on the heart beat of country music. You answered questions I have had about "NS" all season -- in this one short overview. I had wondered why MJ had been making comments on her blog re: the ratings of "NS". Two, I wondered how a rocker (Shawn?) could be viewed on the same level (on a show whose sole goal is to find the next Nashville star) as someone like Gabe.

Gabe is amazing! I see in him a quiet magnetism. I don't understand why the judges label him 'stiff'. I truly see a serene, composed, unruffled charisma when he takes the stage. George Strait comes to mind -- that sort of tranquil and peaceful charm.

I can’t stop thinking about all the talented people who we never get to hear on the radio because of the way things work. Stiff people (LOL). I find myself reflecting on ("American Idol") KLC's self-description of her upcoming album. I recall it took her 4 days to record it. Gabe deserves to record an album and country music needs more Gabe's. I wish KLC all the best and the others, but it will be such a shame if Gabe doesn't win this. He deserves this opening.

I think Gabe’s win could really help the show too.

Forgive me Captain Janeway if I am totally off mark. I don’t know much at all. Your comments helped me to express what I have been thinking all season. There are times like this that I wish I had the power to get you a blog.

BTW my friends, I dyed my hair a lighter color -- to match my real life blonder self. I also jazzed my style. But it's me! Buffy! I chose my new screen name from Sci-Fi too. I had a few names in mind, but went with Lieutenant Commander Jadzia Dax, Science Officer, Deep Space Nine. My hobbies are Klingon Culture and Weaponry. LOL. So Terminators beware! LOL. Now you all know that I am Sci-Fi nerd. But I think I am not alone. LOL. I love the names everyone's choosing.

Thank you Captain Janeway for making all this possible. You don't even know that it is because of you that we keep coming back. As uss_voyager said, "you have a special way of bringing together young [and old] people from all walks of life and backgrounds."

(((H)))

15. Jadzia -
OMG! Dearest JaneWAY. You chose a starship bridge as your background. You also chose Kathryn Janeway's hairstyle! Thank God for you my friend. Sooo often you do things to make the rest of us smile! Your avatar made my MONTH! I have such a big smile on my face now. I even ran into the living room to tell my family what you had done. I know a lot of people on here love Kathryn Janeway from Voyager. I do too. I even have a doll of her. I collect the women from "Star Trek" and "Star Trek" teddy bears. I am a NERD! I can't think of another person who reminds me of her more than you. She is the BEST!!! role model for young people. I think someone else on here wrote something similar to this a while back about you and Captain Janeway. It is such a wonderful and even obvious comparison.

(((H)))

16. Jadzia -
Inspired by our Captain Janeway, I altered my avatar to look as much like a cross between Jadzia Dax (Oh how I wish!) and myself as possible. BTW I am standing in Nighttime Futuristic City Background. LOL. I am also blowing you all kisses. LOL. As I recall Dax was a bit like that. LOL.

(((H)))

17. Karen -
I look more like the girl in the pink cowboy hat but thought it'd be fun to try and look like a female version of Keanu Reeves (Neo/Mr. Anderson) in THE MATRIX. Thanks for the idea Cpt. Janeway. Am I cool or what? ROTFL. '-) '-) '-) '-) '-) '-) '-) '-) '-) '-)

Salut!

It's me Vivienne Marcheline!

I was unable to re~access vivienne_marcheline@yahoo.com.au, but hopefully it was due to a glich in the system.

I LUVVVV!!!!! the new avatars and the names.

I wanted to come up with a meaningful name too. Consequently, I researched the 'Star Trek' universe and 'The Matrix' films. I found the Maquis from 'Star Trek'.

Maquis is also the name for the predominantly rural guerrilla bands of the French Resistance during WW2. Originally the word comes from a type of high ground in southeastern France covered with scrub growth. It is the kind of terrain in which the armed resistance groups hid from the Nazis. Members of those bands were called maquisards. Eventually the term became an honorific that meant “armed resistance fighter.” The Maquis have come to symbolize the French Resistance.

I recognized the phrase immediately when seeing it in lists of 'Star Trek' groups and people. For people who may not know, in regards to 'Star Trek', "The Maquis felt that the Federation had abandoned them to the mercy of a militaristic government bent on their destruction. Refusing to abandon the homes and lives they had built and resettle, and faced with escalating harassment from neighboring Cardassian settlers [the bad guys I assume?] armed by the Cardassian central command (in violation of the very treaty that signed away their homes), they decided that an armed resistance was necessary."

I hope I chose well. It turned out to be very meaningful to me and such fun! Thank you!

Salut!

It's me! Vivienne Marcheline AGAIN!

I wanted to add that I got rid of the black bow in my hair in favor of the black beret for a very significant reason. During WW2 it was standard practice among the Maquis to identify members by wearing a Basque beret because it was common enough to not arouse suspicion but distinctive enough to be effective.

Finally, I'd like to add that I am happy that we are on this particular site. If we had to leave 'the man with the deep, deep voice', I am glad it was for Dr. King. I hope in some small way even my screen name honors Dr. King as the Maquis aided the escape of downed Allied airmen, Jews and others pursued by the Vichy and German authorities. I think Dr. King would have liked that fact.

I'll be back soon my friends to read all about "Nashville Star", "Canadian Idol" etc.

Terrorist attack feared after Jackson arrest

AP

AP - Police concerns that media-hungry terrorists would attack Michael Jackson's trial as a "soft target" led to a request for federal help, according to FBI files kept on the late pop star. The documents also … More »
