Taylor Swift Should Thank Kanye?

Posted Wed Sep 16, 2009 1:16pm PDT by Wendy Geller in Viva NashVegas

Okay, I'm pretty sure that everyone is sick to death of the whole Kanye/Taylor incident (you have to be living on Mars to have missed the story--even the President of the United States had something to say about it). However, I was poking around looking for interesting news from Nashville this morning and came across this blog entry on Examiner.com:

Taylor Swift Should Write Kanye West A Thank You Letter

The blogger in question makes a big deal out of mentioning that Kanye gave Taylor's career "a shot of Petron" (that's a fancy word for "fuel," folks), and notes:

"When you add up all the tweets, Youtube videos, and television coverage this little lady has received, you must agree at the end of the day she'll be just fine as media watches her every move for the next 3-4 months."

Talk about living on Mars?

Hey--yeah! I'll agree! Heck, I'll go a step further and say--at the end of the day Taylor Swift would be just fine if she never showed her face in public again. She's 19 years old and already set for life, both financially and in terms of career achievement (I doubt there's many artists out there who'd deny being happy with reaching Taylor's level of success).

In short, Taylor Swift needs a shot of Petron like Kate Gosselin needs more children.

But another thing that bothers me about this blog is a sentiment I've been hearing quite a bit--I'll quote again from this gentleman's entry:

"What Kanye West did was wrong but what he said was right. Beyonce's million dollar videos are hard for any celebrity to compete with. Is MTV guilty of a little affirmative action in this case? You bet."

Was Beyonce's video better? That's what I keep hearing debate about, and it isn't a question I can answer easily. True, Bey is a consummate superstar through and through, and just about everything she produces is award-worthy. It is a bit of a stretch to compare Taylor's cute, charming "You Belong With Me" to the anthemic "Single Ladies."

However, let's actually look at this in terms of "affirmative action." Affirmative musical genre action. It's no secret to fans of country music that the genre is hotter than it has ever been. It's crossed over into mainstream, pop, tween, rock, and even urban audiences. It is no longer the hick genre to poke fun at (actually, the hick factor of it is conversely what makes it rather cool). People under the age of 35 actually do like it. Artists in other genres are flocking to reinvent their careers as country musicians--and why? Because it's hot right now and it sells.

MTV's Video Music Awards is an event that, well, for lack of a better way to put it, is considerably invested in appearing cutting-edge. What's cutting-edge nowadays in the music world? What's making headlines? Whose faces are you sick of seeing already because they are damn near everywhere?

And, the final question: Who has the active fanbase these days?

Yes, at the end of the day, Taylor will be just fine, as will a host of her Nashville colleagues.

So given all this, was "You Belong With Me" really such a crazy, left-field win this year?

I'll leave it at that, and no more talk on the matter, I promise--unless Kanye proposes to Taylor, or something like that. Hey, I wouldn't be surprised at this point.

As always, be sure to:

what kayne did on MTV music was disrespectful to both taylor and Beyonce. One Beyonce don't need some jackass amp her status in the music world because she been at it for years, acted in movie, and she won music video of the year. she already prove to the world that she the best at what she does. and i hope it hurt kayne soul that he ruin that poor girl night, just because she from the south and does country music and still young to the music game does not give anyone any right to disrespect them. I bet kanye going to rap about our comments in his next album which no one care about.

yeah kanye was wrong and he's said he was sorry he's a human who had to much to drink. But overall Kanye is brilliant in his music and no taylor couldn't buy him it's the other way around. Overall she's 19 there are other things than that she'll be upset about. I like all 3 of the artist Kanye, Taylor and B and with that said they are alll grown let them figure they stuff out...

Kanye is a grand example of how hateful and distasteful human beings can be, he has proved it time and time again. This is just another episode of I want to place myself in history. The true pioneers of racial relations never put their selves in disputes, they found their selves there.. On that note congratulations Beyonce' you were as elegant as you were classy. Thank you for benefiting human kind.

Somebody crunch the numbers....I wonder what the average online hit for Kanye was before the "outburst"...and what it is now. He's getting way more than he deserves out of this.

agreed!

I don't think Taylor Swift owes him any thanks. She was already popular before this happened. People know her music. My best friend and I were saying that if Kanye West had done that to us, we would have grabbed the microphone back, jacked him in the head with it, said, "let me finish my acceptance speech you douche." That was truly a rude and tactless thing of him to do and he really needs to learn some manners. If I were Taylor, I would have seriously slapped him across the face on T.V. I think Taylor's video is just as good as Beyonce's. I don't think you need to spend millions of dollars on stupid music videos anyway. They could put money to better use than that.

Kanye is a Racist

Kanye is an untalented, insignifacant, and unintelligent human being . His poor mother is probably rolling over in her grave at what a stupid, self-serving douche-bag she rasied. Beyonce should be PISSED and tell him to F-off. Taylor should have told him to have a seat in the back and get the F out of her spotlight. WHat a complete loser. I hope he goes down hard and Beyonce & Taylor keep rising to the top! If he could only see how ridicuous he keeps looking, every time...no matter how many apologies!!!

Patron. Not Petron. And don't tell me the writer was trying to be cute and planned to write Petron. It's music. It's alcohol. Have you never heard the phrase?

I dont like what kanye did but to say hes a has-been or untalented is ridiculous and you obviously dont know music. But i hope this is over already because people are more angered by this than a lot of other important things going on.

The name of Taylor's song is "You Belong With Me" not "You Belong To Me", but i also think that Taylor was already a big star obviously she won an award, so she needs to thank no one but her fans and the people that voted for her video.

in a way Taylor Swift has Kanye to thank about. But let's bare in mind that Taylor hold the record of the best selling album as of today with an estimated 3.5 million copies outselling that of Beyonce and Kanye. Taylor has revolutionized country music and I agree on the terms country is hot right now and that is because of Taylor. Sure Beyonce was phenomenal and every thing she does is award worthy, but I don't think MTV would have put Taylor Swift for a win if she doesn't deserve it. And hey where at the topic of Thank you, maybe Beyonce should thank Kanye as well as Taylor Swift because now she has never been this gracious and humble than ever before and plus she inked a perfume contract.. You see it's not all about Taylor Swift, Even Kanye got a little something from this event.

I will also thank the bus driver of the bus that put me in this wheel chair.

Taylor Swift didn't need Kanye's help. She is very successful in music and what Kayne said was just very disrespectful. I say Kayne said what he did so HE could get more popular. When you look at this the way I look at it Kayne isn't a good guy. Ok so this is how I see it, Taylor Swift comes on stage all happy and stuff, begins a thanks to all her fans, then Kayne runs up on stage, takes the mic, and makes her feel bad by saying that Beyonce had the best video and she should have won. He just can't handle the fact that more people like Taylor Swift then him. I agree with Melissa, she dosen't owe him a thanks at all.

17. Megan -
I can't belive Kayne. If it was me I would have said," Let me finish!" and smack him
