Underwood Kicks Off Late Show's "Country Music Week"; Gets Blasted By George Jones

Posted Tue Nov 3, 2009 1:53pm PST by Wendy Geller in Viva NashVegas

This is quite the TV-viewing period for country music fans--not only is Taylor Swift making her much-anticipated hosting debut on Saturday Night Live this weekend, honorary good ol' boy David Letterman's hosting a triad of the biggest names in the biz all week long on The Late Show.

The program's "Country Music Week" kicked off with an appearance from Carrie Underwood last night--the singer performed in a sexy short sequined dress and high boots, and touted her new album "Play On" which was just released today.

Tonight, Letterman will hang with Brad Paisley, and then Keith Urban on Thursday night (the critically acclaimed Ryan Bingham and bluegrass legend Ralph Stanley round out the week). Howsabout we all reconvene here on Saturday to judge who "brang it" the best? I'm laying my bet on Carrie, who is looking and delivering mighty hot these days and will be hard to top for sheer visuals and overall drama.

That said, one person who probably isn't too swayed by Carrie's short hemlines is Country Music Hall of Famer George Jones, who just made the news for stating that Carrie (as well as Taylor and other newer genre lights) is responsible for "stealing the identity" of country music.

"They had to use something that was established already, and that's traditional country music," the 78-year-old Jones said in an interview with the Associated Press. "What they need to do really, I think, is find their own title, because they're definitely not traditional country music."

Who does Jones put his stamp of approval on? Alan Jackson and George Strait. Aw, maaaan--a tad chauvinist of him, no?

But, let Carrie fans get too upset, Jones seems to lean conservative musically in general, calling rap "tacky" and complaining "how can you call that music?"

Better not get Kanye West up on a stage with him, eh? (Or, hey--perhaps that would be kind of fun.)

What do you all think? Is Carrie's type of country music a blight on or a boost to the genre? Check out her performance of "Cowboy Casanova" on The Late Show, and let's discuss.

2. onna -
Carrie is not in anyway a country singer; she can decide what to call her style. She unfortunately has no personality, just a good voice.

3. Karen -
Put Kanye up against The Possum. Even at his age, George can still whup Kanye's booty.

4. Jim -
Irregardless of how you classify her style or whatever label you wish to apply to her, she will still top the charts. She is very talented and she appeals to music lovers of either genre.

5. James -
No way you can call that song Country music.

Times change...evolve. Either change with it or sit back, complain and be miserable. Either way, your comments are wasted with me and I am sure others who simply love MUSIC and love Carrie for what she contributes.

I love Carries voice but George is right, she does NOT sing country music. Newer "country" singers are straying way too much from what country music is supposed to sound like. Not to say they are not fantastic. Country music has been around forever and was just fine the way it was. It didn't need changing. With Carries new album she worked with a producer who produces Rap . What the heck does he know about country music. Really, Carrie ?????

Whatever you call it, I love her voice and her songs. Everyone has their opinions. It may not be traditional country music, but if music styles stayed exactly the same, wouldn't that be really boring? If you like classic country music, then listen to it. There is nothing wrong with tweaking, changing, and doing your own thing, It is called talent and originality. I love Carrie, but I also love Patsy Cline, different, but both very talented.

I love Carrie Underwood and most of the "new country" stars. I am a 63-year-old pop and country fan and, in my opinion, ALL music has gotten better decade by decade. I can't wait to see what happens next. George Jones has been an old man all of his life. I like him, but--with a few exceptions--not his music.

He's right, it's not country music. Most of it is just pop music. Carrie, Taylor, and all are very popular but it isn't country. Comparing Carrie to Patsy Cline is an insult to Patsy. Carrie is very talented and I have nothing against her, but it isn't country. Just call it pop and move on.

Carrie and Taylor arent Country. They are Pop with songs that mean something

George Jones needs to realize the kind of country he sings only attracts people over the age of 70...he SUCKS! Carrie Rocks and always will. She will be more of a legen than George Jones ever would be. I'm 41 and couldn't tell you one of his songs.. and don't care! Go Carrie and PLAY ON!

I have listened to country music, and some of other genres, my entire life, and while Carrie Underwood has a fantastic voice, it is just not possible to call all of her music country. When you can hear the song on a radio station that also plays pop and rap, then I just don't think it should be played on a strictly country station. If you wanna hear some great REAL Country music from newcomers, then listen to A Little More Country Than That- Easton Corbin or White Liar- Miranda Lambert, or songs from the people who really know what they're doing then try The Firefly's Song- Alan Jackson. Sorry Carrie, but in my book you just don't qualify as country.

If you listen to Play On in its totality, it is country music all the way. JTTW and JAD are more examples. You "traditional" country folks just don't know what you are talking about. Carrie is the best, with great messages in her songs. Temporary Home and Moma's Song are NEW good examples that her heart is in country, and they will pass the test of time. Listen BEFORE you speak.

When will the public see thats its not about what is country and see its all about the sales...I have to say Carrie got her foot in by using country and now shes tryin to keep a touch of country in what she does..but as all can see she is not country...she is another cookie form the cutter that Simon has baked...This is why I refuse to watch Am Idol and do not listen to top 40 radio...its what they want you to hear and what they want you to see...this country and country music has taken a backseat to all the ones who thought if your good..you can be a singer..now...they just push them in a studio and out pops a star...George is right...and country is gone...Just the old Corporations and their greed has ruined it all...Power to the People!!!

George Jones will eat your children and then sing you to sleep.

There's a difference between evolving country music and raping elements of it just to layer it on top of pop songs. Anyone who knows anything about playing instruments, recording songs, or writing songs knows what I'm talking about. A song isn't country just because somebody played a steel guitar on it or somebody sang with a little drawl in their accent. There is something to be said for having the integrity to keep a genre pure to its essence and purpose.

Is there anything wrong with mixing the two genres? No, of course not. Not if there is a genuine artistic purpose to it. But there IS something wrong with mixing rock with country with the intent of tagging it as "dated" and trying to push it out of people's collective consciousness just to appeal to the bigger-money crowd.

Keith Urban is an awesome musician, songwriter, and all around performer. But he is a rocker, not a front porch picker, and THAT is the the difference in essence between rock and country. Taylor Swift has a sweet voice, and can write some of the best girl-pop songs you'll ever hear. But she is more of a Starbucks chick than she is a poor-it-black-from-your-own-pot kind of woman. Again, essence.

Taylor Swift can best be described a just a "screaming little girl". Ain't nuthin country about her. Well okay, she does wear boots sometimes. Apparently the awards voting is done by 12-15 year old. Pretty face, but no body. Carrie Underwood is a whole different story. She can definitely be as country as she wants. Anyone who thinks that she can't sing "Country" only needs to listen to her on the Randy Travis classic, " I told you so". And she has songs about "lying and cheating". Haven't figured out yet what Taylor Swift's songs are about. So Yes, George Jones is right. Wynonna is absolutely right. " Someone killed country music down on Musc Row........."

George is right. A lot of what people do and call country isn't really authentic country music. That said, if people want to buy what they're selling, who cares? Making art isn't really all about making money, anyway.

20. goestoeleven -
George is 100% right. Most of what comes out of Nashville and marketed as "country music" is just pop music or heavy metal/hard rock stuff with a steel guitar or fiddle here and there, but you can't blame the artists entirely--it's all about the overwhelming preoccupation with mediocrity and money and pushing product.
There is real and good country music being made, but it doesn't get airplay. A lot of the stuff New West, Lost Highway or Bloodshot Records put out is real, good and soulful country music.
