Matt Nathanson: As Heard On TV

Posted Mon Mar 23, 2009 3:36pm PDT by Craig Rosen in Who's Next?
Even if you're not familiar with Matt Nathanson, chances are that you've heard his music on television. Nathanson's songs have been featured on such TV shows as Scrubs, Privileged, NCIS, Women's Murder Club, Men In Trees, One Tree Hill, Newport Harbor, and Private Practice.

Yet the San Francisco-based singer-songwriter is not just some studio rat concocting music for TV, he's a real live touring musician. In fact, Nathanson kicks off his latest tour on April 7 at the Warfield in San Francisco on a bill that also includes Jack's Mannequin and Low Vs Diamond. Nathanson and his band will tour with Jack's Mannequin through early May before moving on to dates with Sugarland for the latter part of May, and August, September, and October.

So you can experience the magic of Nathanson's live show, we have some footage of him performing live, during the first leg of his Some Mad Hope tour, at the House Of Blues in Chicago. Here are Nathanson and company performing his current triple-A hit, "All We Are" live for your pleasure.

As you heard in the video, Nathanson plays a brand of emotional adult pop not too dissimilar to John Mayer or Jason Mraz, but he's not some newcomer merely copping their style. Nathanson has been releasing records since the early '90s. He's had stints on indie and major labels and now finds himself somewhere in between on Vanguard Records, distributed by major EMI. Whatever the case, Nathanson's commitment to his music is unwavering and he continues to steadily building a following. Check out this live version of "Come On Get Higher," also recorded at the House Of Blues in Chicago.

One of the things I like most about Nathanson is his good taste in other people's music. In his blog, he recently raved about a version of Coldplay's "The Scientist" by former Concrete Blonde front woman Johnette Napolitano. "Wish I had written 'The Scientist.'" Nathanson confesses. "I'm not the hugest Coldplay fan, but that song crushes. Johnette Napolitano, ex-Concrete Blonde, does a version that just turns my insides out. It decimates. I listened to it on repeat last night while I fell asleep. Spooky dreams. She has my most favorite of female voices."

Turns out that Nathanson is handy with other people's songs as well. His version of "Laid," written and originally recorded by recently reunited British band James, is featured on the American Wedding soundtrack. No matter how schlocky that seemingly never-ending series of films may be, Nathanson's cover is pretty darned good. Check it out and let me know if you think Matt Nathanson's time has come or is he just another singer-songwriter trying to be heard.

"Adult pop music". I'm 18 and I'm IN LOVE with his music. I listen to his music everyday. I found out who he was thanks to Pandora. :) Matt Nathanson seems like a genuine person with amazing talent. He's one of the few artists that DESERVE to go big.

I absolutely love him...my new favorite!

matt nathanson is most definitely worthy of the attention. the music is beautiful, the lyrics enchanting, and he seems to poor more of himself into a truthful performance than seems possible. a live show is a mix of these incredible songs, audience involvement on classic covers, and hilarious interactions. "some mad hope" is the current disc, but "at the point" gives a taste of what a live show can be like, and is the disc that caught me. he's a good guy and a fantastic musician. please check him out soon. www.myspace.com/mattnathanson

Matt Nathanson is an amazing singer & song-writer who has a rare talent for holding an audience in the palm of his hand. I have been fortunate enough to see him twice & absolutely loved his show! I can't wait until he performs again near me. I will definitely be there!

Love Matt Nathenson. I've been a fan forever. Glad he is finally getting the recognition he deserves. One of my favorite albums is Beneath These Fireworks. It's an older one but it has some wonderful music on it.
Matt is at his best live though. I never miss a show when he comes to town. Heck I'm driving 4 hours to Ames, IA to see him since he isn't coming to Mpls this summer.

ive been a fan FOREVER!!

Matt Nathanson is possibly one of the best live performers ive ever seen, just because of how much he interacts with his audience. he has unconditional fun at his shows, and it makes you enjoy it even more!
He has an insane amount of talent, and it's so surprising he's only now becoming known to the world.

On the terms of covers though, he does a mean "Crazy Train", "Jesse's Girl", and "Blister In The Sun" (believe it or not!)

They recordings are hard to find, but if you can manage it, you'll be laughing and singing along to his Ozzy impersonations for weeks.

Go see a show of his if you can! Soon enough he'll be selling out Madison Square!

I've been a fan of Matt's since I was introduced to him 6 years ago and seen him every time he's been around Chicago since then. He's incredible live, if you have a chance to see him GO!

I'm from Indonesia, probably a country nobody on this forum has ever heard before (well, if you've ever been to Bali, that island is a part of Indonesia). Anyway, I'm a fan of Nathanson, and particularly love his live cd "at the point" and have already worn out my "some mad hope" cd a couple of months ago. It's sad that guys like Matt don't have their albums distributed to a country like mine. Just sad. I had to put way extra efforts to get music from artists like Matt (no, i don't like downloading music, i want the cd and live performances). Worth it all.

anastatiar is spot on, At the Point is an amazing CD and Matt is even better live. Do yourself a favor and catch him on the current tour if you can. I'll be at the Grand Rapids, Mi show in April for sure. I was always "kind of"a fan of Matt for years and then I saw him live and he went to the top of my list. He's pretty much amazing and singing obviously and then you get a stand up comedy act too and it's completely spontaneous like that "one guy" you know that is hilarious and tells amazing stories and you could care less if they are embellished. That's Matt. He's not a run of the mill singer/songwriter by any means. He's definitely put in the dues and deserves the spotlight.

Same as Carlo T I'm from the Philippines part of Asia if not for 1 of our local stations jam 88.3 which played his song "come on get higher" in 2008 I will never ever get to know this great talented magnificent artist.
When most our local radio waves constantly plays David Cook, Ne-yo, Britney, Miley and Jonas Brothers. Its a really breath of fresh air to hear Matt songs, and yes getting his record is another hard task to aquired. So when I got the chance to go to Hong Kong and look for his "Some Mad Hope" cd even though it cost me about 1,000 pesos or like a 25 US$
I didnt hesitate and just bought it and loved all the tracks!! and now I'm thinking in buying at Amazon for the rest of his records even though it will cost a bit much bec of its shipping charge.
Also glad he's getting recognition and seeing him play in David Letterman and Ellen well deserve indeed!!!!

Luv him Luv him Luv him!!!! He ROCKS it Live! I actually prefer his live stuff to his studio work.. If you want a great starter cd, check out "Live At The Point"- some of his best work. Half the charm of Matt Nathanson is his comical introductions and commentary on his songs and the meaning behind them. On "Live At The Point" you get to hear some of his intros. Definitely check him out if he is coming any where within a 100 mile radius to you! I've driven 5 hours (one way) to see him. A friend of mine flew from the East coast to Cali just to hear him perform acoustic.. Well worth the jet lag!

17. BrianL -
what a genius! It's a wonder he's not top of the charts each week. MATT ROKS!!

I saw Matt in concert for the first time 7 or 8 years ago and have been following him ever since. He is incredible on stage. By far my favorite musician! Not to mention after every concert he sticks around to meet with everyone. Very Cool!
