The Little Girls Shout NeverShoutNever!

Posted Wed Apr 1, 2009 2:34pm PDT by Craig Rosen in Who's Next?

If you really want to know about the hot new acts of the future, sometimes you have to listen to the kids. In this instance, the kid is a 12-year-old girl who attends middle school in the San Fernando Valley. She recently turned me onto an act called NeverShoutNever!, which isn't a band per se, but the alias of a single individual, born 18 years ago in Joplin, Missouri as Christofer Drew Ingle.

Like many 12-year-old girls, this young lady is a big fan of the Jonas Brothers and listens to top-40 radio station KIIS-FM. Yet she's been occasionally open to new artists such as Amy Winehouse, Duffy, Katy Perry and Lady Gaga, even before they had hits. What I found striking about NeverShoutNever! is that he is an indie artist with no label, nor radio airplay. She heard about him the old fashioned way and perhaps the best way to build artist loyalty--through the word-of-mouth of a friend. Check out NeverShoutNever!'s "Bigcitydreams" video below.

Funny thing is, I bet most people reading this had never heard that track before unless they happened to tune into MTV's Total Request Live one day in July 2008. That exposure may have gotten the ball rolling. In late December 2008 and January 2009, the track topped Billboard's Hot Singles Sales chart for four non-consecutive weeks, besting titles by Lady GaGa, Madonna, and Britney Spears. In "Bigcitydreams," Ingle plays an acoustic guitar, but what initially made me think NeverShoutNever! was a unique act is the fact that he plays a ukulele on several of his songs like a young Don Ho for the emo set. Check out his latest single, "Happy" below.

Happy

Although I can't say that NeverShoutNever! is my cup of tea, I can see the appeal. Ingle is a handsome young lad with emo-boy hair, a sweet voice, and songs that hit the young ladies where it counts. As I played the video above for that 12-year-old girl, she literally held her hand to her heart and swooned. Then I asked the unthinkable, "Do you like him better than the Jonas Brothers?" Shockingly her reply was, "Yes," said with a little regret, as if she was betraying her beloved Nick.

That kind of devotion points to big things for NeverShoutNever! Plus, Ingle and his management team seem to be making all the right moves. They're allowing his following to grow organically by releasing a series of EPs--demo-shmemo and The Yippee EP in 2008 and Me & My Uke EP in 2009. Next up is the self-titled full-length album in May, which will be followed by summer EP, slated for June.

Much of NeverShoutNever!'s initial following came from the act's presence on MySpace, but now Ingle is taking the show on the road. On Friday (April 3), he'll play as part of the Bamboozle Road Show at the House of Blues in Anaheim. This Saturday (April 4), he plays at Bamboozle Left at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre, then he'll be featured on Bamboozle Road Show dates throughout the U.S. during April. In late July and early August, he's slated to appear on Vans Warped Tour dates in Detroit, Chicago, Minneapolis, St. Louis, and Kansas City.

With this touring exposure and the word-of-mouth from swooning 12-year-old girls, I think NeverShoutNever! is destined for bigger things. How about you? While you ponder that question, have a listen to another NSN! track, "Smelyalata."

Not my cup of tea either, but he may end up with a promising career propelled by the adoration of such adolescent female fans as the one you mentioned.

Smiley, it's Craig...not chris

That aside, Itoo see the appeal, and Imust say he is decent, but Ifind that I am not the intended target (teenage girls)...making enjoyment somewhat difficult.

I love Chris Ingle! He is so sweet and considerate, and yes, I am a 13-year-old chick, but he has the sweetest lyrics, and could have any girl he wanted...even me!

Smiley, nvm, I misread your comment...

Lame. They can make anybody a star these days. All you have to do is be attractive, and get a record deal with some people that will help you make some fake radio-freindly music.

12. Priya -

honestly?! do you guys really have to be so mean?! this kid has a great songs and is very passionate about his music. the fact that half of these people are saying that he's fake and using looks to get a record deal is BS go look up your facts before you start talking smack about a musician that has more potential than half the freaking artists out there! people are ignorant!

I've know Chris for awhile, before he got into his NSN! persona, and I must say, he's cheated his way there. Playbots on Myspace gave him his 30,000 plays a day, and he's turned into quite a jerk. He won't even talk to me anymore. It's a pity to see talent misused like this.

18. Paige -
I've been listening to NSN for since last summer.
He's pretty much a myspace hero.
His play count is through the roof.
I know his lyrics are appealing to younger girls, but I know a ton of guys that like them too.
He's got a sound like hellogoodbye mixed with the acoustics of The Scene Aesthetic.
I have no doubt he's going to be big. He's about to have Warped Tour under his belt, and after that he's just going to sky-rocket.

19. Kelly -
Dude, you hatazz are all f*cking lame.
This guy OWNS.

And.... I'm not a 12 or 13 year old.

20. Kelly -
Rolling stick.... You're F"king retarded.

And paige, you're right.

After Warped Tour, he's gonna pop off.
