Top Wedding Songs For The First Dance

Posted Fri Jun 13, 2008 5:04pm PDT by Robert of the Radish in The Y! Music Playlist Blog

Everyone wants their wedding to be perfect. And when planning for that special day every couple gives a great deal of thought to the songs that will be played at both the ceremony and the reception.

Previously on the Y! Radish we've posted a playlist of the most popular songs for the garter toss part of the wedding reception. As you would expect, the garter toss list is lighthearted and filled with sexual innuendo, but the songs reserved for the "first dance" are a different animal.

This is the song the bride and groom will dance to for the very first time as husband and wife, so the vast majority of couples opt for classic tracks brimming with romance. This consistency of romantic choices is one of the reasons that a video like this has gotten 10.5 million views at YouTube.

My wife and I fell out of the norm with our selection as our first dance pick was "There Is No If..." by the Cure.

The following playlist includes the most requested first dance songs selected by couples as recorded by a mobile DJ survey conducted by discjockeys.com.

These songs are /so/ sweet. I can really connect with the gentleman who discussed how he and his wife went "out of the norm" by selecting a song by the Cure. My fiance and I are getting married and we are always looking at songs that can be our "first dance song." When we went and saw "Juno," the love story between Juno and Bleeker really hit a chord with us. My personal favorite part was when the pair sang a song called "Anyone Else But You." It was originally by The Moldy Peaches, and the last verse is a little...inappropriate, but we are going to see if it can be edited out. It is /definitely/ not a traditional first dance song...very alt-rock and almost moody, but it completely fits us perfectly!

A perfect wedding song is "Something About Us" by Clay Aiken from his new CD "On My Way Here". It sounds like something Frank Sinatra would sing.

unchained melody is still the best by the righteous brothers.
You have a great list of requested songs.

I just got married a little over 2 weeks ago. We had Mariah Carey's "When I Saw You" played for our first dance. It was perfect.

First Day of My Life by Bright Eyes is an absolutely adorable song. I believe it was played at Pete Wentz's wedding.

"You and me" by lifehouse, or "truly, madly, deeply" by savage garden (Remember them?)

    9. ZULAIKA -

    10. Jed -

We had "U" by SOCIALBURN. But I think "Baby" from THE USED would be great too!

    13. Douglas B -
Your love amazes me. John Berry

I'm glad to see my own first dance song, number 8 on the list :-)

    16. Baby Girl J -
IS THIS ONLY FOR WHITE WEDDINGS??

    17. Josh -
My wife and I dance to "I want to grow old with you" by Adam Sandler.

    18. KurtR -
Nice list. But you should have put on the list "Lost in this moment" by Big & Rich. It's a beautiful song for a first dance. And for the Father & Daughter dance you can have "I loved her first" by Heartland.

    19. WarrenB -
"The Final Countdown" by Europe should be on this list.

    20. Mrs.Butters -
Goodlist but you left out my personal favorite...My Best Friend by Tim McGraw-that was our 1st dance wedding song. We practiced and rehearsed over and over. We thought we were Tim and Faith(or should I say we wished we were Tim and Faith!)
