Hey Man, Is That Freedom Rock?

Posted Wed Jun 25, 2008 5:39pm PDT by Robert of the Radish in The Y! Music Playlist Blog

“Hey Man, is that freedom rock? Yeah man! Well, turn it up, man!”

Do you remember this TV commercial -- the one with the two hippies who sold this classic rock compilation album out of the back of their van? I certainly do. In fact, I was one of those who purchased it. I wish I held onto it, because it’s impossible to find today.

Back in the late 80s when Freedom Rock was released there was a full-on hippie revival in effect. Kids were dressing like their bohemian parents did in the 60s and the Grateful Dead were dragging a whole new generation of tye-died, patchouli-drenched longhairs across the country. The subculture still exists today, but during the 60s revival of the late eightees an enterprising company put together this compilation of 40 classic rock hits (many of which I have a hard time associating with either freedom or hippies).

The sold-only-on-TV collection was sold on 4 LPs, 3 cassettes or 2 CDs. And now 20 years past the release of the Freedom Rock compilation, the songs still stand up.

I have reconstructed most of the 40 songs from the Freedom Rock set for your modern day listening pleasure in Yahoo Music Jukebox and Rhapsody.

Turn it up man!

Ah...some great tracks in it.

I quote the hippies all the time when they say "is that freddom rock? well turn it up!" and they all look at me like I am nuts. When I tell them it is from an old commercial no one remembers it. Back in the day everyone was quoting those dudes. Its awesome to see someone remembers the commercial like I do

3. Ralph -
the commercials were better than the albums themselves. i would buy one if they throw in something from ronco. a pocket fisherman or something.

Ralph, you made me laugh out loud.

What amazes me is what they were able to license then. It was a younger, more innocent various-artists time.

6. Moose -
hey, does anybody know the name of the song that was playing when the commercial started? the one that the hippies say "hey man..."

7. Moose -
Nevermind... i figured it out. it's Layla by Eric Clapton. So the commercial should have gone a little more like this. "Hey man, is that Freedome Rock? No man, it's Layla, and it's not even on the Freedome Rock CD!!!" lmao.

8. Moose -
well, nevermind again. somehow i missed it on the cd. it's there.

9. Andy -
Well, turn it up, man!
