Patriotic Songs For The 4th of July

Posted Tue Jul 1, 2008 2:33pm PDT by Robert of the Radish in The Y! Music Playlist Blog

July 4th is a day when Americans can put aside their political differences and celebrate the love they share for their country. No matter where you stand on the issues that face our nation, America is our home -- and we will always love our home. On Independence Day the skies of America will be lit by fireworks, children will be enraptured by parades and neighbors will gather at barbecues and picnics to celebrate the birth of their nation.

July 4 is a national holiday and the only holiday that celebrates the United States of America. Ask any American and they will tell you that the 4th of July is not complete without fireworks, American flags, American food and music.

Musical choices for the 4th include traditional patriotic songs, military marches and regional favorites. For this playlist I have pulled together some of the most popular songs that will be played at events across the USA on the 4th of July.

If your holiday will be spent at home, at a picnic with friends or at the community fireworks display this playlist can provide the soundtrack for your evening.

42. Yahoo! Music User -
If you've never heard John Stewart's "Mother Country", give it a listen

Hi Happy 4th to everyone and hopefully be safe too. I agree with Sam H. about the list of songs are mostly played at the celebration but for a more a patriotic song to list. Here's one that most American may or may not know its depending on your age. "God Bless America" by Kate Smith she was most famous for singing that song than any other songs she sang. She one of the older singer/entertainer when tv was a golden era.

44. Matt T -
Actually Chris S. there was The War of 1812; when we fought the British again.

45. Matt T -
They need Jimi Hendrix's star spangled banner. Classic.

46. Jessica -
Chicago's Saturday in the park would complement today nicley.

47. -
Where's Lamb of Gods' Forgotten (Lost Angels). Its pure F****ng American Metal!

48. Evan -
how about Blaze of Glory by Bon Jovi?

49. Nikki -
I don't know who said "Independence Day" by Martina McBride, but that is a song about freeing yourself from the hold of an abusive man. It really has nothing to do with partiotism.

50. ShawnPB -
God bless the USA was a great one. They forgot two of the most patriotic songs therte could be:::

Courtesey of the REd White and Blue- Toby Kieth

American Triology- Elvis Presely

Come on those are BEAUTIFUL songs

51. jennifer d -
what about Proud to be American, Born in the USA. This is America and I am tired of all the liberals that are sick of showing their respect for this country. I feel that the only flag to be flown outside your house should be the American Flag. I live in Queens and I see a lot of flags in Richmond Hill that are flags of Iran and Iraq outside their homes. Like I really want to see this on the fourth of July. They complain about harassment of their kids in school yet they refuse to have thir kids say the pledge of alligiance.

Born In the USA is NOT a patriotic song! " It's about the Vietnam War. Bruce even says it isn't a patriotic song.
Born down in a dead man's town
The first kick I took was when I hit the ground
You end up like a dog that's been beat too much
'Til you spend half your life just covering up

[chorus:]
Born in the U.S.A.
Born in the U.S.A.
Born in the U.S.A.
Born in the U.S.A.

I got in a little hometown jam
And so they put a rifle in my hands
Sent me off to Vietnam
To go and kill the yellow man

[chorus]

Come back home to the refinery
Hiring man says "Son if it was up to me"
I go down to see the V.A. man
He said "Son don't you understand"

[chorus]

I had a buddy at Khe Sahn
Fighting off the Viet Cong
They're still there, he's all gone
He had a little girl in Saigon
I got a picture of him in her arms

Down in the shadow of the penitentiary
Out by the gas fires of the refinery
I'm ten years down the road
Nowhere to run, ain't got nowhere to go

I'm a long gone Daddy in the U.S.A.
Born in the U.S.A.
I'm a cool rocking Daddy in the U.S.A.
Born in the U.S.A.

So where is "Let Freedom Ring" by Barry Manilow?

54. Hannah P -
"Born In the USA" isn't patriotic. It was written about a returning soldier from Vietnam and how everything has changed...

I'd put "The Battle Cry of Freedom" up on that list. ^^

Also, whoever said Fortunate Sonby C.C.R., that is definitely not a patriotic song either. It's a Vietnam protest song. While I can understand that it is part of the beliefs of this nation to be able to protest and stand up for what you believe in, you should look at the lyrics before you try to say that it's a patriotic song. It's more about the government and the issues surrouding the Vietnam war, and is definitely not very patriotic at all.

56. Pamala -
Everyday, I play AMERICAN SOLDIER by Toby Keith and Lonestar's SOMEBODY'S SOMEONE when
I go to work everyday...now that I have RAGGED OLD FLAG, it will be added to the list as well.

57. Hannah P -
I, personally, would not put up "Dixie" as patriotic. The song was adopted by the Confederates during the Civil War, even though Lincoln used it during his inauguration. Some people view the song as offensive, viewing people that sing the song as singing sympathy for the concept of slavery in the American South, during the Civil War-Era.

Dan Emmett, who wrote "Dixie" said that if he knew the Confederates were going to use it as their anthem--he would have never written it.

58. Rosalie C -
proud to be an american is also good

59. Yahoo! Music User -
So many of you keep listing Born in the USA. Have you actually listened to any of the words? It is not a patriotic song.

60. christian -
Neil Diamond's coming to America was the first son g i thought of... It should be on the list...:)
