Patriotic Songs For The 4th of July

Posted Tue Jul 1, 2008 2:33pm PDT by Robert of the Radish in The Y! Music Playlist Blog

July 4th is a day when Americans can put aside their political differences and celebrate the love they share for their country. No matter where you stand on the issues that face our nation, America is our home -- and we will always love our home. On Independence Day the skies of America will be lit by fireworks, children will be enraptured by parades and neighbors will gather at barbecues and picnics to celebrate the birth of their nation.

July 4 is a national holiday and the only holiday that celebrates the United States of America. Ask any American and they will tell you that the 4th of July is not complete without fireworks, American flags, American food and music.

Musical choices for the 4th include traditional patriotic songs, military marches and regional favorites. For this playlist I have pulled together some of the most popular songs that will be played at events across the USA on the 4th of July.

If your holiday will be spent at home, at a picnic with friends or at the community fireworks display this playlist can provide the soundtrack for your evening.

what about america from simon and garfunkle

"This Land Is Your Land" by Woody Gudthrie is a folk protest song that was written in response to "God Bless America." Doesn't surprise me that the maker of this list doesn't know what the mean. You can't have it on the list with these other songs. It doesn't work. But these list never surprise me in there lack of knowledge. It's the same with "Born In The U.S.A." by Bruce Springsteen, for those suggesting that. These people should actually listen to these songs and god bless america should be taken off and any song like it.

63. Jeff -
What is with calling Francis Scott Key a lesbian???? And even if that was the case, it shouldn't matter.

Some history they don't teach you in schools: he did not write the music to the SSB. he only wrote the WORDS. The actual tune was sung in England at bars, where they would set different texts to the melody "To Anacreon in Heaven."

And please, people, stop bickering about if the music is patriotic enough. This is just a list of the most popular music played on July 4.

It's to bad he didn't put allyour suggestions up. he really should have, it'd be a better list.

OR
It's his frickin list! If you don't like it.. then make your own blog list! Sheesh..

God bless America

65. GAIL -
Shooter Jennings' "Fourth of July" is a joyous love song, celebrating a journey to the Willie Nelson picnic several years back. A contemporary take on the day, I'd like to see it on this list of patriotic songs. It honors Willie's annual event of great significance, a road trip, a long-time love, and a fine day for it all--American values, as I see them, personal and public, and not tangled up with WAR!, as so many of the songs listed are. War is not the only route to
patriotism!

66. Michael -
no lee greenwood = epic fail

epic fail = epic fail

67. Buddy -
Neil Diamonds "America" is a classic as is Ray Charles. Not including them is a travesty. So is failing toinclude Hendrix. But what would I know, I was born on July 4th and was 21 on the 200th anniverary of our country.

68. bill j -
how can you forget about ray charles? Yahoo makes the most retarded lists

69. RachelY -
Yankee Doodle was written to make fun of the US! "Macaroni" was a term used to reference great style of fashion at the time. So Yankee doodle sticking a feather in his hat and calling it macaroni meant he had none.;-)

What about
"Courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue"... by Toby Keith...? at least i think so...

71. JaredW -
What about American Trilogy by Elvis? WTF?

72. Heather -
Melly F. - It's admirable that you try to be understanding of others. I think, however, that Jennifer's point might be that if you come to live in America, you need to have made the decision to BECOME AN AMERICAN. At that time, you should decide that our culture, our flag, and our language are yours too and you should embrace them wholeheartedly. You can't be loyal to two countries. It doesn't mean that you hate your birthplace or that you forget it, but you must decide whether you are an American or not. I think the separation of multiculturalism is hurting our country tremendously. You needn't bother coming here if you are not willing to love this country as your own and become part of the "melting pot, " the philosophy which made us so great. When people came here in decades past, it was not to be an African American or an Asian American and so on, you just wanted to be an American, like we were again right after 9/11.

Born in the USA is NOT a patriotic song. This drove me nuts after September 11th, when every radio station in the country was playing it constantly, and didn't realize that the song is about a veteran who came back from Nam to find a country didn't want him back, didn't treat him well, and wouldn't hire him. The chorus is ironic; "I was born in the USA", and implies that he's no longer IN the USA.

Pet peeve of mine.

74. Courtney -
The fact that Born in the USA isn't actually patriotic doesn't mean it isn't PLAYED constantly on the 4th of July. Isn't that what the list is about?

Although I agree that it's annoying when people think it's a GO USA! type of song.

75. Emilyk -
What about born in the USA by Bruce Springsteen? That should be on here,
whats up with all of yahoos lists lately...
they said hes on the top ten rockers ever, so why isnt his song about the US on here??

76. lloyd -
what about some gave all- billy ray cyrus and the Just a dream by carrie underwood... these are a few i have on player to blast during firework

77. Grumpy -
Lighten up Chris S. The Overture of 1812 represents any nations fight for freedom and has been played for years as a tribute to this countries battles for freedom as well. It is a favorite of the people of Boston every 4th of July celebration when the Boston Pops plays it on the esplanade and it's televised all over the world. Take the politicism out and enjoy the hype it causes.
