The Top 15 Albums of All Time (By Women)

Posted Wed Jul 30, 2008 6:11pm PDT by Robert of the Radish in The Y! Music Playlist Blog

I knew the column "Top 20 Albums Of All Time (For Real)" would get some attention, but the post is now showing over 7500 comments. I honestly wanted to read them all, but it's just impossible for me to do so. Thanks for commenting - I did read a lot of them!

If you did not see the original post you can view it here. Basically the idea was to select the top 20 albums of all time based on statistics instead of personal opinion. To recap the parameters, they were:

1. The list was based on the American market - I did this only because I had mounds of detailed data on the American music market at hand - to include the whole world or even Europe would increase the complexity of the analysis greatly - So it was really the "Top 20 Albums of All Time (To Americans)"

2. "Greatest Hits" albums and live albums were not eligible. The idea was to identify the very best true albums, not compilations that cherry pick the best songs from an artist's career.

3. The following mathematical formula was used:

"Album Staying Power Value + Sales Value + Critical Rating Value + Grammy Award Value"

If you would like to see the complete analysis you can download the Microsoft Excel version here: (Top Album Analysis.xls).

After reading through a slew of comments the following points caught my attention:

1. You should have included "cultural value" or the album's "influence" on popular culture.
I completely agree with all the posters who made this point, but how do we capture it? Maybe a poll or the total number of biographical books and video sales on each artist? We all know who has influence - The Beatles are probably #1, but how do we quantify it from there and how do we get the data?

2. The Staying Power Value for double albums is too high since they cost more.
This was factored into the numbers

3. SPV is flawed as it doesn't take inflation, population, etc into account.
Good points that I am reflecting on, I tend to agree that the formula can absolutely be improved on. It's finding the data and analyzing it that's the hard part.

4. You should have included world wide sales and albums that sold less than 10 million.
Man, I love your enthusiasm! But this is a part time gig for me and I have to be realistic. I am publishing a blog, not writing a thesis. But if you want to support me and my family while I work on it please contact me and let me know.

5. Thriller won 8 Grammys, not 4!
I only include album specific Grammys, not song or performance related ones. i.e.: Record of the year, best rock performance, etc., were not included

6. Only one album fronted by women! What gives?
Good question, and I will address it now. I have filtered the list further to include only those bands fronted by women.

where is daydream nation?

I still think the double-albums are weighted too heavily, especially Physical Graffitti. PG's higher price is the only thing that beats several of the lower-rated albums.

Led Zeppelin IV is not their best album, but there's no way it belongs lower than PG. Which raises another question: are "secondary market" prices for the highest-selling albums (IV, White Album, The Wall) skewed lower because the supply is greater, thus hurting their rankings?

3. Lori Fran D -
The First Album to come to my mind was Tapestry and then Rumors by Fleetwood Mac...this was great music with great lyrics...we need more like these oldies...of course, that does reflect my age..where is Carole King these days?

4. tarinhe -
"The Miseducation of Lauryn Hilll" by Lauryn Hill was nominated for 11 grammys in 99 and won 5! How is that not on here??!!

5. HELLwearsLiPsTiCk -
I find myself rather disappointed by most of the albums that made the list; how sad is it that a list of the most highly praised and best-selling albums include works by Britney Spears?

If women are ever going to really earn respect in music, we need to start supporting better artists.

6. DennyRules -
Once again, the list creator spent too much time with a calculator in his hand rather than just listening to music.

7. Marlon D -
Exuse me people that might have sold multiplatinum albums but were they is good(ex. Britney Spears(talentless)). How about Lauryn Hill - Miseducation of Lauryn Hill and Janet Jackson - Control, Rhythm Nation 1814, & janet. Timeless classics with some substance.

8. cymro -
One and two are good enough for me..the rest I could care a less about.
I remember in '71 when I heard Tapestry..I loved the sweet earthiness to it. Kinda fell in love with Carol a little too.

Hey, how come a new posters post is at the bottom rather than the top of the posting list?
I posted to your 20 best albums and couldn't find it...then post here and see it below everyone who posted before?
Whats the point in posting, if your going to be buried pages back?
I guess my "new" post there is somewhere behind 8,000 plus posts.
When ya read email, ys start at the bottom one (first one), then work up to the top one. (most recent)
Is this a problem I'm having, or is this the the order the posts post..if so, why?
A new thought should be seen as "a new" thought..not one posted behind other posts made days ago?!

I just needed to see Tapestry in the top 3.

And Jagged little Pill in the Top 10.

Pleasantly suprised to see Norah Jones there, too.

Other than that, meh.(

11. Ben O -
Glad to see so many people still recognize Tapestry as the wonder it is. SO many people are quick to dismiss something just because it's old or Very popular. I mean, there's Barbra Streisand here at all I assume because the word missing from the title of the article is ROCK.

This list just proves that the public will buy some real crap.

13. Yahoo! Music User -
No Lauren Hill?

14. Katelyn -
Dixie Chickssss! Thank you for putting them on! (:

15. Danyelle -
Don't like it so much. This guy does alot of lists and I have yet to agree with one of them. i'm sure there are more female singers other than Britney Spears and mariah carey who have had top selling albums.

16. Bruce -
I can't be sad with Tapestry, great album. it is definitely sad that Fleetwood Mac is considered a women band, since they existed almost 10 years before Nicks joined and did their best stuff without her, like future games and kiln house and everything with Bob Welch. christine mcvie is where its at as far as bluesy female musicians go though.

17. Larry K -
to the person who commented "Norah Jones is the only decent musician in the group" were you speaking of the singers?" Of the female singers listed they all have great styles and some great powerful voices but how does any of us know or how do you evaluated their being "musicians?" Never could figure that out.

18. How -
I have all of these! Great list.

19. coolvet34 -
Although mariah is on the list twice (but so is Britney!!!???), her debut album "mariah Carey" should have been in the top 2. Fleetwood mac is a group!!! #1 tapestry #2 Mariah carey #3 Whitney Houston is much more realistic!!!! where is Aretha, lauryn,Janet, etc. biased as usual!

20. SB -
No Lauren Hill, Alicia Keys, or Janet Jackson's best three albums: Control, Rhythm Nation or Janet? But you have the incredibly talentless Britney Spears up there--TWICE? And we're supposed to take this list seriously? Buy a clue.
