The Top 15 Albums of All Time (By Women)

Posted Wed Jul 30, 2008 6:11pm PDT by Robert of the Radish in The Y! Music Playlist Blog

I knew the column "Top 20 Albums Of All Time (For Real)" would get some attention, but the post is now showing over 7500 comments. I honestly wanted to read them all, but it's just impossible for me to do so. Thanks for commenting - I did read a lot of them!

If you did not see the original post you can view it here. Basically the idea was to select the top 20 albums of all time based on statistics instead of personal opinion. To recap the parameters, they were:

1. The list was based on the American market - I did this only because I had mounds of detailed data on the American music market at hand - to include the whole world or even Europe would increase the complexity of the analysis greatly - So it was really the "Top 20 Albums of All Time (To Americans)"

2. "Greatest Hits" albums and live albums were not eligible. The idea was to identify the very best true albums, not compilations that cherry pick the best songs from an artist's career.

3. The following mathematical formula was used:

"Album Staying Power Value + Sales Value + Critical Rating Value + Grammy Award Value"

If you would like to see the complete analysis you can download the Microsoft Excel version here: (Top Album Analysis.xls).

After reading through a slew of comments the following points caught my attention:

1. You should have included "cultural value" or the album's "influence" on popular culture.
I completely agree with all the posters who made this point, but how do we capture it? Maybe a poll or the total number of biographical books and video sales on each artist? We all know who has influence - The Beatles are probably #1, but how do we quantify it from there and how do we get the data?

2. The Staying Power Value for double albums is too high since they cost more.
This was factored into the numbers

3. SPV is flawed as it doesn't take inflation, population, etc into account.
Good points that I am reflecting on, I tend to agree that the formula can absolutely be improved on. It's finding the data and analyzing it that's the hard part.

4. You should have included world wide sales and albums that sold less than 10 million.
Man, I love your enthusiasm! But this is a part time gig for me and I have to be realistic. I am publishing a blog, not writing a thesis. But if you want to support me and my family while I work on it please contact me and let me know.

5. Thriller won 8 Grammys, not 4!
I only include album specific Grammys, not song or performance related ones. i.e.: Record of the year, best rock performance, etc., were not included

6. Only one album fronted by women! What gives?
Good question, and I will address it now. I have filtered the list further to include only those bands fronted by women.

This still seems alittle biased "Up" shouldn't be on there a all it had very little impact "Come on Over" should have been up way higher, that crossed over from country to urban areas, i disagree with "Oops" and "Fly" as well they more or less just rode off the immediate release of there predecessors if that was the case "Whitney" should have been included on the list, that sold just as well, I think Alicia Keys "Songs in A Minor" should have been added because of it's impact.

22. AugustoM -
Formula? We don't need no stinking formula. The top albums will always be the highest sellers. Everyone has their opinion but bottom line is if you like it, you will buy it. And the albums with the most crossover in the population will always come out on top. End of formula.

23. monstin06 -
theres is something wrong with all of u with hating on britney really she may not be the GREATEST singer ....but she can peform!! andyways... wheres Christina Aguilera?? I know Whitney and Madonna have sold many more albums that should be on the list... also wheres Janet, Cher, Janis?

24. AlayiaT -
they need need a report so can have something to care about

25. acroyear -
Why exclude females artists like Joni Mitchell, Janis Joplin, Barbra Streisand or Rita Coolidge? Trash like Spears pop crap get on twice and no mention of the previous three I mentioned? Staying power value? WTF? Sales value? Sure when CD's cost more than albums did 30-40 years ago. GRammys are a sham. There's a lot of crap out there and too many people listen to it!

26. JettNJett -
I would disagree with this List...Some great talent(Tapestry, Jagged Little Pill, and a couple others..) But Britney..Please!
I Love Fleetwood Mac..But not really a female fronted band Lindsey Buckingham is a major part and singer as well!
Where's I Love Rock N Roll By Joan Jett? Or Pat Benatar..There are sooo many female greats that could be on Here! Bangles....Go-Go's...

27. Josh -
Great job Robert, thanks for sticking to the facts and not so much opinion!

28. drem -
this list is moronic.
fleetwood mac? thats a band jackass!
and hello!!!! where is Pearl by Janis Joplin?
what a truly stupid list based on idiocy, not formaula

29. Alisha -
Oops!…I Did it Again!

PLZZZZZZZZZZZ!!
Knock her OFFFFFFFF!!!!!
So if you ave a prob. with it I do not CARE!!

30. Eric -
Grammy and sales? Too bad. Patti Smith's Horses one of the greatest and most influencial albums and she's not on the list.

31. Nestor -
When you have list that has Britney Spears in the top albums, it's time to call it a day.

32. cuteepie78 -
The other list was pretty good. It made me proud, and had me believing that people actually DO listen to decent music. But this list makes me sad to be a human being. I'm embarrassed for us. TWO Britney albums??? Come on people! I agree, people listen to crap!
And yes, Lauren Hill should have made the list. And Christina Aguilera is a WAY WAY WAY more talented artist than Britney ever has been or ever will be. Why aren't people listening to her? Oh that's right, people will listen to ANYTHING nowadays. Geez! I think there should be a men's list. I bet Wililam Hung will be on there. *rolls eyes*

33. m t -
Woo! Go list! although I think it should include Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation.

Stop hating on Britney. The girl has the business smarts to know what sells, She's doing something right, or she obviously wouldn't have sold so many albums. She is a great ENTERTAINER. This list is about lasting power, and Britney has that if we're still talking about her 10 years later.

Her sales were obviously enough to make this list with her lack of Grammy Awards.

People need to sit down, stop complaining and comparing, and enjoy the music of their taste!

live and let live, people.

34. Ralph -
Janet Jackson's Control is missing from this list.

35. Yahoo! Music User -
wtf?
fleetwood mac?

does anyone know that madonna is the RICHEST, HIGHEST SELLING, MOST FAMOUS WOMEN SINGER OF ALL TIME?!?!?!

this blows.

36. Ryan -
No Pat Benatar? Some of todays artists are remaking her songs. She was one of the greatest women of rock & roll since the 80's.

37. ab -
Every list I have veiwed by you has been tragically flawed and not well researched and usually is out of synce with actual chart positions and sales

38. Yahoo! Music User -
I TOTALLY AGREE - NO LAURYN HILL?

39. Jonah -
Fleet wood mac doesn't really count

40. Louie -
Let's take Britney Spears off the list. She shouldn't even be on there AT ALL!!!

Mariah's "Music Box" is good but "Daydream" is one of her worst albums in my opinion.

And why isn't Joni Mitchell's "Court and Spark" or "Blue" on the list? I'm not a huge Joni fan but, come on, her music has been more influential over the years than several of the artists on this list put together.
