The Top 15 Albums of All Time (By Women)

Posted Wed Jul 30, 2008 6:11pm PDT by Robert of the Radish in The Y! Music Playlist Blog

I knew the column "Top 20 Albums Of All Time (For Real)" would get some attention, but the post is now showing over 7500 comments. I honestly wanted to read them all, but it's just impossible for me to do so. Thanks for commenting - I did read a lot of them!

If you did not see the original post you can view it here. Basically the idea was to select the top 20 albums of all time based on statistics instead of personal opinion. To recap the parameters, they were:

1. The list was based on the American market - I did this only because I had mounds of detailed data on the American music market at hand - to include the whole world or even Europe would increase the complexity of the analysis greatly - So it was really the "Top 20 Albums of All Time (To Americans)"

2. "Greatest Hits" albums and live albums were not eligible. The idea was to identify the very best true albums, not compilations that cherry pick the best songs from an artist's career.

3. The following mathematical formula was used:

"Album Staying Power Value + Sales Value + Critical Rating Value + Grammy Award Value"

If you would like to see the complete analysis you can download the Microsoft Excel version here: (Top Album Analysis.xls).

After reading through a slew of comments the following points caught my attention:

1. You should have included "cultural value" or the album's "influence" on popular culture.
I completely agree with all the posters who made this point, but how do we capture it? Maybe a poll or the total number of biographical books and video sales on each artist? We all know who has influence - The Beatles are probably #1, but how do we quantify it from there and how do we get the data?

2. The Staying Power Value for double albums is too high since they cost more.
This was factored into the numbers

3. SPV is flawed as it doesn't take inflation, population, etc into account.
Good points that I am reflecting on, I tend to agree that the formula can absolutely be improved on. It's finding the data and analyzing it that's the hard part.

4. You should have included world wide sales and albums that sold less than 10 million.
Man, I love your enthusiasm! But this is a part time gig for me and I have to be realistic. I am publishing a blog, not writing a thesis. But if you want to support me and my family while I work on it please contact me and let me know.

5. Thriller won 8 Grammys, not 4!
I only include album specific Grammys, not song or performance related ones. i.e.: Record of the year, best rock performance, etc., were not included

6. Only one album fronted by women! What gives?
Good question, and I will address it now. I have filtered the list further to include only those bands fronted by women.

music is personal and the music you enjoy should not be a competiton on how many other agree with you by buying music colletively. If a song makes you feel good then thats all that matters.

42. Justin -
Nothing for Songs in A Minor by Alicia Keys? That won 5 grammys! or even Amy Winehouse won 5 grammys.

43. Joshua -
AMY WINEHOUSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
why is she not on this list????

44. Darlene -
fleetwood mac was a band. furthermore, christine mcvie was it's female force long before stevie nicks.
at least you recognized carole king, a very talented artist.
my list would include, janice joplin, carly simon, helen reddy, billie holiday, loretta lynn and lauryn hill. women who actually wrote alot of their own songs.

45. James W -
Terrible List! What are you 13 years old? Ever hear of Emmylou Harris? Linda Ronstadt ? Lucinda Williams? Aretha Franklin? How can you put anything up there for Madonna? I don't know anyone that listens to her crap! You obviously have to get out more! Is this what's in YOUR home library? Eeewwwwwwww!

46. fe's blog -
I'm kinda suprised to not see Lauryn HIll on this list too. But on the upside thank you for NOT including Beyonce, Her voice is a tad bit irritating at times.

47. m -
I completely agree with all the choices lol.

48. Carlay -
I'm really surprised R&B's finest aren't on here. Mariah Carey? come on now...you can do better than that.
what about Lauryn Hill, Janet, Mary J., and even Alicia Keys??
and ESPECIALLY Lil Kim! what about her?! haha (that was a joke.)

Too many bloggers with inaccurate oppinions...I sure hope Yahoo isnt paying you for this....Money wasted

50. jaman -
Absolutely love "Rumors" but it doen't belong on this list. After all Lindsey Buckingham sang some of the songs too!

51. Leia -
Everyone knows that Lindsey Buckingham is not a woman, right? Rumors is an awesome album, but I don't think it's correct for Fleetwood Mac to be on this list.

52. Yahoo! Music User -
How ironic that the highest selling album on this list is number 15, and number 1 has sold 1 million LESS. Please put the calculator down...you're annoying us.

53. robin m -
Who cares? Its not like music is really important anyway. Get a life!

54. ab -
If you want to see the actual real list go to Billboard.com this list here is just garbage

55. Yahoo! Music User -
Yes we all know that the American public buys a lot of crappy music.... that's why albums like Britney Spears are in the #4 and #6 spots. But people need to stop whining about "how come -insert your personal fave here- isn't on the list?"... The Radish took the time to think about this and actually made a formula that he has applied to generate this list and the top 20 albums list, rather than basing it on his personal tastes. If you think you can make a better formula, then do it. Otherwise, accept it for what it is. I for one would love to see albums like "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" on here instead of Britney or Shania, but according to his formula, it doesn't make this list. I'm not crying about it.

BLOGGERS SUCK....GET A LIFE GEEKS

If true and pure female talent and integrity are being measure by sales=Grammy...God save us all.

Here is a list the Gammy's can choke on:

PJ Harvey
Liz Phair (pre self titled 4th album)
Bjork
Patti Smith
Fiona Apple
Joan Jett
Blondie
Cat Power (aka Chan Marshall)
Sleater Kinney
Suzanne Vega

Nuff Said.

58. Yahoo! Music User -
Most of this is bubblegum pop that I wouldn't listen to if my life depended on it. And where's Flyleaf and Evanescence?

59. Gregory -
No Allison Krauss?
"Jagged Little Pill" marked the end of the alternative movement. It a well produced and marketed album by the 1990s version Miley Cyrus.

60. Emily -
preety creepy that brineys on here.i think they could've picked better.but i do applaud fleetwoodmack.
