The Top 15 Albums of All Time (By Women)

Posted Wed Jul 30, 2008 6:11pm PDT by Robert of the Radish in The Y! Music Playlist Blog

I knew the column "Top 20 Albums Of All Time (For Real)" would get some attention, but the post is now showing over 7500 comments. I honestly wanted to read them all, but it's just impossible for me to do so. Thanks for commenting - I did read a lot of them!

If you did not see the original post you can view it here. Basically the idea was to select the top 20 albums of all time based on statistics instead of personal opinion. To recap the parameters, they were:

1. The list was based on the American market - I did this only because I had mounds of detailed data on the American music market at hand - to include the whole world or even Europe would increase the complexity of the analysis greatly - So it was really the "Top 20 Albums of All Time (To Americans)"

2. "Greatest Hits" albums and live albums were not eligible. The idea was to identify the very best true albums, not compilations that cherry pick the best songs from an artist's career.

3. The following mathematical formula was used:

"Album Staying Power Value + Sales Value + Critical Rating Value + Grammy Award Value"

If you would like to see the complete analysis you can download the Microsoft Excel version here: (Top Album Analysis.xls).

After reading through a slew of comments the following points caught my attention:

1. You should have included "cultural value" or the album's "influence" on popular culture.
I completely agree with all the posters who made this point, but how do we capture it? Maybe a poll or the total number of biographical books and video sales on each artist? We all know who has influence - The Beatles are probably #1, but how do we quantify it from there and how do we get the data?

2. The Staying Power Value for double albums is too high since they cost more.
This was factored into the numbers

3. SPV is flawed as it doesn't take inflation, population, etc into account.
Good points that I am reflecting on, I tend to agree that the formula can absolutely be improved on. It's finding the data and analyzing it that's the hard part.

4. You should have included world wide sales and albums that sold less than 10 million.
Man, I love your enthusiasm! But this is a part time gig for me and I have to be realistic. I am publishing a blog, not writing a thesis. But if you want to support me and my family while I work on it please contact me and let me know.

5. Thriller won 8 Grammys, not 4!
I only include album specific Grammys, not song or performance related ones. i.e.: Record of the year, best rock performance, etc., were not included

6. Only one album fronted by women! What gives?
Good question, and I will address it now. I have filtered the list further to include only those bands fronted by women.

Same old Same old CRAP! Run by some scumbag british or some anglophile.
As for grammys who the %^&* cares, its an opion. Dahh.. no one buys or likes any music because it wins an award, well maybe some losers do. As always all this crap about who is number one at what ever is an opion of some white recist who can't stand it that most of very very best music is created by non-whites. Thats a FACT!

107....Last I remembered, you don't have to please ppl...But I also know that people don't use Formulas when choosing albums in the record store. If it was based on HIS opinion, then I would be fine with it. But he said top 15 albums ALL TIME!!!! If I was him, I would've seen this coming 15 lightyears away. You must love math...

Ummm i hate to tell you this but Fleetwood Mac is a band not a person! 3 of 5 group members are male. Not that it isn't a great album (because it is) but it doesn't really fit into your category. And they had around 10 albums out before Nicks and Buckingham joined the group. And Stevie Nicks only wrote 3 of 11 songs on the "Rumours" album. Its hardly a Stevie Nicks solo album.
And where is Sara McLachlan?

post 107 , you cry like your his BOYfriend

I like this list but find it hard to believe that a total non-singer like Britney Spears could have sold that many albums. I'm sure that your numbers are correct, but purchasing anything of hers is a total waste of money. I'm glad to see that the Dixie Chicks have sold well. The Bush supporters hurt them for a while.

Um... excuse me, where is Janet Jackson? Rhythm Nation, Control, Janet, and The Velvet Rope are classic albums with substance and huge commercial success. There would be no Britney, Ciara, Aaliyah, Beyonce, the list goes on and on without her!

Don't try to make a racial issue out of it. READ THE EXPLANATION AT THE START OF THE ARTICLE. By the way, if he has issues with Blacks, how come Stevie Wonder was #1 on his top 20 albums?

post 116 , you just want a list entirely dominated by black artists , quit whining you halfwit

110. Santo L -
Oh, and let's not forget Toni Braxton. Her self-titled debut and her second album Secrets were also top sellers. Remember Breathe Again, Another Sad Love Song, You're Makin Me High, and Un-Break My Heart?

He DID use a mathematical formula, so I used math as an example to try to make my point. He was trying to be objective, but people are judging it subjectively. Simple as that.

oO(Why are my name and picture not coming up on these posts?)

Celine rocks & it's good to finally see her get her due! She is one of the greatest female artists of all times!!

117. Scott and Connie -
I LOVE Fleetwood Mac...but I would never concider THEM a Solo female artist. As for the formula, I think it's awsome that you take the opinion out of it. And even though I am shocked at the list it really opens up my eyes.Geeze people Britney couldn't be on here if we as a nation quit buying her albums. It's as simple as that. As for who I think should be added, well it's obviously not going to matter because it's who actually sold albums...not who I like more.

118. Melissa. -
I love Fleetwood Mac and Shania Twain. I'm happy they made it. But since Fleetwood Mac is a band, can't they put groups too? Surely the Spice Girls should be on here? They sold plenty.

119. Yahoo! Music User -
one more, can you do groups?
(sorry) ;)

120. momo -
LOL. I agree with alot of people that say this list just proves how brainless most of the consumers of music in this country are. There are SOME artists who actually deserve to be on this list and then there are those who were just hyped up and bought by brainless teens.
