The Top 15 Albums of All Time (By Women)

Posted Wed Jul 30, 2008 6:11pm PDT by Robert of the Radish in The Y! Music Playlist Blog

I knew the column "Top 20 Albums Of All Time (For Real)" would get some attention, but the post is now showing over 7500 comments. I honestly wanted to read them all, but it's just impossible for me to do so. Thanks for commenting - I did read a lot of them!

If you did not see the original post you can view it here. Basically the idea was to select the top 20 albums of all time based on statistics instead of personal opinion. To recap the parameters, they were:

1. The list was based on the American market - I did this only because I had mounds of detailed data on the American music market at hand - to include the whole world or even Europe would increase the complexity of the analysis greatly - So it was really the "Top 20 Albums of All Time (To Americans)"

2. "Greatest Hits" albums and live albums were not eligible. The idea was to identify the very best true albums, not compilations that cherry pick the best songs from an artist's career.

3. The following mathematical formula was used:

"Album Staying Power Value + Sales Value + Critical Rating Value + Grammy Award Value"

If you would like to see the complete analysis you can download the Microsoft Excel version here: (Top Album Analysis.xls).

After reading through a slew of comments the following points caught my attention:

1. You should have included "cultural value" or the album's "influence" on popular culture.
I completely agree with all the posters who made this point, but how do we capture it? Maybe a poll or the total number of biographical books and video sales on each artist? We all know who has influence - The Beatles are probably #1, but how do we quantify it from there and how do we get the data?

2. The Staying Power Value for double albums is too high since they cost more.
This was factored into the numbers

3. SPV is flawed as it doesn't take inflation, population, etc into account.
Good points that I am reflecting on, I tend to agree that the formula can absolutely be improved on. It's finding the data and analyzing it that's the hard part.

4. You should have included world wide sales and albums that sold less than 10 million.
Man, I love your enthusiasm! But this is a part time gig for me and I have to be realistic. I am publishing a blog, not writing a thesis. But if you want to support me and my family while I work on it please contact me and let me know.

5. Thriller won 8 Grammys, not 4!
I only include album specific Grammys, not song or performance related ones. i.e.: Record of the year, best rock performance, etc., were not included

6. Only one album fronted by women! What gives?
Good question, and I will address it now. I have filtered the list further to include only those bands fronted by women.

u guyz should quit hating because YOUR favorite isn't on the list!!!!!!

162. jose -
another horrible list.
i could do your job.
what is yahoo! thinking?

163. Markus -
wow Amy Winehouse Back to Black was a classic album......at least should have made the list somewhere.......and I agree that Lauryn Hill should be there somewhere too......

164. terrellm -
No TLC Or Lauryn Hill? I Love Your List, But Come On? Staying Power? Shania And Norah been Gone Just As Long..

165. Christopher -
A good way to look at culture impact or influence would be to track how many cuts on the album were later recorded by other artists. For instance virtually every cut on Carole King's Tapestry was later recorded by hunderds of other artists. Unfortunately the best tool to look that up is Joel Whitburn's "Album Cuts" book but it hasn't been updated since 2001. That book listed every cut on every album to ever make the Top 200 album chart in Alphabetical order along with which albums they appeared on. So every version of "It's Too Late" no matter who the artist would be listed.

166. KahunaBen -
All of those artists that people keep whining about will never be on this list. Specific criteria were set and had to be met in order to be included on the list.

Minimum 10 million records sold.
Greatest Hits albums not included - only looking for the "best true albums."
Albums sales were for the US market only.
Either solo woman artists or band fronted by women. (Fleetwood Mac is considered to be fronted by women, hence the "lead-singer(s)" being female.

Wow people. Now I see why Obama is so popular - dumb people are gullible.

Janet Jackson - Rhythm Nation - 6 million US sales - Doesn't meet criteria
Lauren Hill - Miseducation... - 8 million US sales - Doesn't meet criteria

It goes on and on. Stop whining, turn off your TV and pick up a book. Instead of popping out babies, get an education.

167. jillr -
Why even bother putting grammys into the formula? Do you see all the crap that has received grammys? The grammys have always been a big mess.

168. Jane Bell -
No Heart? What's up with that? Dreamboat Annie is not a classic album? Come on!

"Once again, the list creator spent too much time with a calculator in his hand rather than just listening to music."
DENNYRULES
did you even read the description of this article
he was supposed to determine these through sales not by listening

170. Cams -
"This list just proves that the public will buy some real crap."

I agree with that. Lol.
:)

171. Cockshot Carrera -
Really this list is too heavy on the SPV value. How does the album from Shania Twain the NUMBER 1 seller with 20 million, NUMBER 3 best rated with 4 stars and won a grammy when half the list didn't, and it comes in last place? It makes no sense. The system is flawed! Plus, I am SHOCKED that there is no Janet Jackson at all.

172. Nancy -
How about:
Rock: Janis Joplin, Chrissy Hines (The Prentenders), Gracy Slick or Heart (Anne & Nancy Wilson)..No Sheryl Crow?? that ain't right. Debbie Harry (Blondie)
How about MoTowm..Aretha Franklin, Diana Ross and The Supremes, The Pointer Sisters, Gladys Knight
Disco 70's - Olyvia Newton-John,
Donna Summer, Chaka Khan
Country - Tammy Wynette, Tanya Tucker, Reba McIntire, Loretta Lynn, June Carter-Cash, Anne Murray

All of these ladies r better than Britney, who is on your list twice!! Good grief!!

173. Angeleos -
Mariah and Britney definetly belong there fleetwood mac though seriuously?

174. Money Man -
Nothing Britney Spears does is great!!

NOTHING!!

175. Yahoo! Music User -
why is janet jackson's control on here , the list is stupid if it doesn't have her.

176. ali -
What about Beyonce's Dangerously In Love?

177. Brian K -
No Joni?

Crap list..............

178. Ophelia -
I agree with HELLwearsLiPsTiCk. Although I am happy about Fleetwood Mac, they rock.

179. mundo -
why is there so much confusion between units sold and talent? most of the women on this list (apologies to the rest of Fleetwood Mac) could sing rings around many of the women on this list - no electronic enhancement, no megamarketing - just TALENT!!!! anyone with half a brain will depend on his/her reaction to music without the benefit (ha!ha!) of marketing numbers or bloggers

180. ronald w -
FLEETWOOD MAC A FEMALE ARTIS ARE YOU KINDING ME! MOST OF THE SONGS WERE WRITEN AND SUNG BY A MAN.
