After teaching my two children, age 3 and 5 , the finer points of the game of football yesterday in the backyard, we came in to wind down with some TV. I saw that "The Secret Life of Donuts" was about to begin on the Food Network.
I do enjoy this show and my kids really love to see how things are made so I put it on. They were completely fascinated by the process of making donuts. But as we watched I realized that I had never taken my children to a donut store! In this new over-sensitive and over-analyzed world we tend to deprive our children of the joys we ourselves enjoyed when we were tykes.
I decided there was no better way to cap off the learning experience delivered by the Food Network than to take a trip to our local donut shop to pick up a dozen. It was so fun to watch the excitement on my kids faces as they picked out 12 donuts for the family to share. Although the donut is one of the most unhealthy things you can give your kids, it would be worse to deprive them of such joys altogether.
Everything in moderation, including donuts.
