If you’ve had the pleasure of seeing Carlos Santana perform live, you’re aware of the positive spiritual aura he radiates, not just through his music, but by his very presence. He’s always been the quintessential musical peacenik.

Since 1988 Carlos has kept a vision of sharing the stage with some of the greatest musicians in the worlds of rock & roll and jazz. Not just to produce a Santana concert sprinkled with special guests, but to bond musically for the cause of peace, love and understanding. The world famous Montreux jazz festival gave him his chance on July 15th, 2004. Luckily, the event was captured and is available on DVD.

The line-up joining Carlos and company on stage included Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Ravi Coltrane, Idrissa Diop, Angelique Kidjo, Barbara Morrison, Patti Austin, Sylver Sharp, Steve Winwood and Nile Rodgers.

Although a concert titled Hymns For Peace certainly sounds like it could take on an air of hokey preachiness, it never does. Thankfully, it doesn’t delve into a political agenda either. Carlos is one of the few who understands that real change does not come from spewing condemnation, but from within. As my infinitely wise grandmother used to say, “you catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar”. How right she was, and Carlos Santana lives this credo.

Clocking in at about 3 hours, this 2 DVD set is full of positive vibes, but it’s also an amazing ride to watch such brilliant players having such fun with each other.
