The definition of "disease" is an abnormality of the body or mind that causes discomfort, dysfunction, distress, or death.

There are untold numbers of diseases that can afflict human beings -- so much so that it's difficult to think about without getting the heebie jeebies. The fact is, we will all have various diseases in our lifetime and chances are good that one will eventually kill us.

The melancholy associated with disease has made the subject a boon for songwriters who have learned to use it as a creative device. This playlist examines songs that use disease either figuratively or literally to get their point across.

What "disease" songs have I missed?

How about Elyse Bruce's "Countdown to Midnight" CD which raises funds and awareness for autism. The sales of those CDs also fund the Midnight In Chicago Autism Spectrum Podcasts.

I'm amazed that you guys left this single mom with an autistic child off the list. It's a great album. Why don't you guys know about it?

Now if you're gonna include tuberculosis, you gotta use Van Morrison's "T.B. Sheets".

And though it's not a "real" disease, you could resist catching the "Rockin' Pneumonia and the Boogie-Woogie Flu"?
