22 Years of Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Inductees

Posted Mon Jan 28, 2008 4:43pm PST by Robert of the Radish in The Y! Music Playlist Blog

2006 was the 20th anniversary of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, whose most well-known function is “to recognize the contributions of those who have had a significant impact on the evolution, development and perpetuation of rock and roll by inducting them into the Hall of Fame.”

An artist or band cannot be eligible for induction until 25 years from the release of their debut album. And the official criteria for consideration include “the influence and significance of the artist’s contribution to the development and perpetuation of rock and roll”.  Of course, many sub-genres feel they are under represented at the Hall, so not everyone agrees with the foundation’s selections. 2006 inductee The Sex Pistols even referred to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as a “Piss Stain”. But then again the Sex Pistols would not be the Sex Pistols without such a comment, and in fact, the band generated much more publicity by publicly rejecting the Hall of Fame.

Personally, I’m not so sure I agree with a bunch of music insiders and journalists selecting artists to be held in higher esteem than others, but on the other hand the list is much better than the Billboard Charts. Either way, I could not resist creating this playlist.

Even if there are serious omissions in the The Hall of Fame, the artists that have been selected to date all have undeniable influence in the world of popular music. Inductees enter the exclusive club in one of four main categories: Performers, Non-Performers, Early Influences and, since 2000, Side-men. The foundation also occasionally bestows an award for lifetime achievement. This playlist contains one classic track by all the YMU available artists that have been inducted as performers, or as early influencers. At over 11 hours, this playlist is a time capsule of Rock & Roll history.

I agree. Motley Crue and Kiss need to be Inducted. But most of all, Rush needs to Inducted because they are still Touring and Performing Today after 30 some years in the Music Business.

rush and kiss deserve to be there. what kid hasnt listened to them as a teen? as every new generation hears them, they should be considered.

    8. JACOB -
What will the rock and roll hall of fame do when mainstream music diverges to the point that most music is not considered rock and roll? Will Nirvana, Korn, and Radiohead ever be mentioned?

    9. JACOB -
By the way I have never listened to Kiss or Rush, but Rush deserves to be in the hall of fame regardless of my opinion.

    10. Super Sam -
I also think Heavy Metal Bands like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and Slayer should be inducted since they been around for a long time and are still touring and performing.

    11. Pam -
When is Journey (with Steve Perry) going to be inducted??? They are way past due.
