Joe Boyd was born in Boston, Massachusetts, raised in New Jersey and educated at Harvard. After moving to Europe Boyd started working as a production and tour manager for George Wien where he had the opportunity to work with artists like Muddy Waters, Stan Getz and Bob Dylan (for which he supervised his infamous electric debut). In 1966 he opened the famous UFO club in London.

Boyd earned his first record production credit in 1966 when he produced four tracks for Eric Clapton and the Powerhouse. His career expanded to the point where he became a force on the British folk and psychedelic scene producing classics by Pink Floyd, Nick Drake, The Incredible String Band, Fairport Convention, John Martyn, Richard & Linda Thompson and many more. Later in his career he molded songs by artists like R.E.M., 10,000 Maniacs, Billy Bragg and others.

Boyd also became involved in film as the director of Music for Warner Brothers Films where he worked to produce the scores of such classic films as Deliverance and Clockwork Orange. He also created the film documentary Jimi Hendrix (1973) and founded his own label called Hannibal (now a part of Rykodisc). Today he resides in London without a label and claims to be "uninterested in going to gigs involving WPSEs (White People Singing in English)".

Boyd has written a book about making music in the 1960s called White Bicycles - Making Music in the 1960s, published in May 2006 by Serpent’s Tail Press in the UK.

This playlist provides a good overview of Joe Boyd's diverse body of production work.
