Top 15 Songs Over 10 Minutes In Length

Posted Mon Nov 17, 2008 5:35pm PST by Robert of the Radish in The Y! Music Playlist Blog

In popular music a song over 5 minutes in length has traditionally been discouraged by record companies and a song over 10 minutes can be seen as pure insanity.

The conventional thinking is that mainstream music fans do not have an attention span capable of stretching to the 10 minute mark. When radio and MTV were actually relevant, programers would never give 10 minutes of airtime to one song. A lengthy single was a death nail for music promoters whose sole job was to get a song heard.

I'm afraid that the attention span of the masses has shrunk even further with seemingly unlimited amounts music available at the click of a mouse. Not to mention the sly new tactic of promoting music through :15 second clips in prime time television shows and in advertising.

Luckily, popular music has its fair share of quality 10 minute+ songs. Many of them follow in the tradition of jazz, where the music is used to transport the listener for an extended period of time through the use of epic dynamics and technical complexity. But there are also lengthy songs that take a more pop-centric road. This playlist examines the very best of the extra-long track in popular music regardless of approach.

Outside of each pick having to be an original studio recording over 10 minutes in length, this playlist is purely subjective. But I can promise you that I considered each selection carefully, and since I limited myself to just 15 songs I had to make some painful cuts (sorry Yes fans).

Please let me know which selections you agree with, which ones you don't, and what you would add. And please, listen to these songs in their entirety!

Jane's Addiction last 4 songs off of Ritual De La Habitual those songs were all amazing. "Three Days" being my favorite. Nice to see Nick Cave and The Velvet Underground I didn't know that people reporting on here had musical taste.

well done on including Kraftwerk, Neil Young, The Velvet Underground, Television,Sigur Rós...it's an all around good list for yahoo. I understand only using one Dylan song as not to flood, but personally I'd say Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands over Desolation Row. and much as I love Nick Cave, and awesome as he is, it's always questionable when something from Nocturama is chosen. maybe could've included Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding, but otherwise no complaints. good show.

The whole genre of progressive rock and modern day progressive metal is littered with a fair share of numbers in this length. While they may have not made your list, I'd have to suggest the following songs: Spock's Beard - At the End of the Day, Spock's Beard - The Light, Transatlantic - All of the Above, Dream Theater - A Change of Seasons, Symphony X - The Divine Wings of Tragedy, and Fates Warning - The Ivory Gate of Dreams. My ELP vote would have to go to Karn Evil 9 ;)

Stranglehold is 8:23.

All Nightmare Long is 7:57.
Master of Puppets is 8:38.
One is 7:24.
Enter Sandman is only 5:29.

One of the most forgotten bands is WAR. They have many songs over 10 minutes which stand up to the criticism of greatness:

1. The World is A Ghetto (for inclusion on this list)

Other great tunes which are close to qualifying:

City, Country, City
Gypsy Man

11. DUDE -
In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida.

12. Hitparader -
Great Mix, although I agree that Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding would a pick of mine also. Kudos on the Genesis pick. Makes me nostalgic for the day when music actually involved creativity, originality and musicianship...Homer Simpson was right that rock music was perfected in 1975...

BTW the music player seems kinda hosed, altho the cover of Achilles Last Stand is cool in a tribute band kinda way..

13. DAVID -
TOOL - 10,000 Days (wings for marie part 2)
TOOL - Rosetta Stoned
TOOL - Reflection
THE MARS VOLTA - L'Via L'Viaquez

You should of listed Funkadelic's "(Not Just)Knee Deep" and Sugarhill Gang's "Rapper's Delight" these are true classics.

15. Chris the first -
This is a good list, but I'd like to see more heavier songs. Here's a few:
Type O Negative - "Black No. 1" and "These Three Things"
Chiamira - "Implements of Destruction" and "Six"
Cradle of Filth - "Tearing the Veil from Grace" and "Funeral in Carpathia"

16. john -
dire straits Telegraph Road live version

No Doors!?

18. Trin -
Personally I would've chosen "Echoes" over "SOYCD". Perhaps you can put it on your list of songs over 20 minutes long.

Meatloaf has had several lengthy songs. I expected to see him on the list.
