The World's Biggest Selling Christmas Singles

Posted Thu Dec 4, 2008 5:49pm PST by Robert of the Radish in The Y! Music Playlist Blog

Bing Crosby's 1942 recording of the Irving Berling penned "White Christmas" is the biggest selling single of all time. The song has sold in excess of 50 million copies worldwide. Berlin wrote the song while relaxing by the pool in a Phoenix, AZ resort in 1940, and Crosby would record and release it two years later. "White Christmas" has become one of the most recognized songs in the world, and can instantly stir that Christmas feeling in old and young alike.

No other song has come close to this incredible sales number. The nearest competition is Elton John's remake of "Candle In the Wind", which he released as a tribute to Lady Diana in 1997. That single has sold around 37 million worldwide. But where the sales for the Elton John single were driven by a singular event (the death of Lady Diana), "White Christmas" continues to sell year in and year out as new generations add it to their must-have lists.

For this playlist I've selected only the biggest selling Christmas singles. To make this list the song had to be released as a single, and had to sell at least 5 million copies. As you will see, Bing has three of the seven Christmas songs that made the cut. These three singles account for over 86 million units sold. That is an unbelievable number, and Mr. Crosby will surely hold the record for some time to come.

Certainly, most of you are familiar with all of the songs in this list, but what songs would you add to make the perfect Christmas playlist?

The World's Biggest Selling Christmas Singles

   1. White Christmas - Bing Crosby (50 Million)

   2. Silent Night - Bing Crosby (30 Million)

Go find us some Hanukkah singles,we won't even mind if they are still waiting to be bought.

2. Yahoo! Music User -
Neil Diamond would be the perfect choice,he sings Christmas songs,Hanukkah songs and even songs for those who don't have a holiday to celebrate in December.

3. DUDE -
Bing Crosby sold mega-millions and wasn't a drug addict or sicko....Go figure!

Who buys Christmas singles these days? And why would anybody want to? Retail stores nation wide start playing Christmas songs the day after Thanksgiving, most Oldies Radio stations play Christmas songs non-stop throughout the holiday, many music channels on television do the same. They can be downloaded online, and an entire cd full of them can be burned for free. In some communities, groups of people go door to door singing Christmas songs. I agree Christmas music is annoying as Hell. How long is it until December,26th?

Not everyone has the same taste in music and yes Christmas has become very commercialized. But the reason I believe you do hearit in stores and on the radio so much is because it is a way to put all of us in a much better spirit so we can get through the holidays and remember some of the fun from our childhood and of coarse the true meaning of Christmas..I love all Christmas music the older music is what I like best. And certainly things are rough but we need to try not to be a scrooge but to share in the spirit and encourage others to do the same.

Do you people know what the real reason is for Christmas. Get the good book and read and think about it.

There are Christmas songs from most every music genre. As far as Christmas music goes a little goes a long ways. Same songs, different year. The dreaded best of and worst of the year lists will be popping up next. Happy X-mas. Oops,I took Christ out of Christmas, the real reason for the season.

I love me some Jesus but I also enjoy humor. I recommend Norm Mcadonald's 12 days from his album Ridiculous or Jeff Foxworthy's 12 redneck days. Just a couple times each December though. Stations do way overplay Christmas music as well as any new release.

wow your lists are pretty lame.

Hey, he forgot about Johnny Mathis.

I would add Clay Aiken's Christmas songs to the list. No one sings Christmas songs like he does. His version of "Mary Did You Know" is so beautiful. Other favorites by Clay Aiken are "Oh Holy Night" and "All is Well."

Misty B you seem synical enjoy the holidays.
Try to be happy. Stephen D. it's not nice to
criticize other people for their taste in
music. What a boring world this would be if
everyone liked the same thing. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to everyone!

Donny Hathaway's This Christmas is my favorite.

15. Yahoo! Music User -
I would add My Grown Up Christmas List by Kelly Clarkson and either Mary Did You Know or All Is Well by Clay Aiken.

:)

What about Elvis's Blue Christmas?

18. Lennie -
Bing and Bowie... Little Drummer Boy, The Ramones... Merry Christmas (I Don't Want to Fight Tonight), The Waitresses ... Christmas Wrap, Wham ... Last Christmas... a few selections that aren't played on the loop you find at every Christmas station or department store, but are great for the holidays.

Dude, Bing Crosby was far from a saint. His son wrote a "Daddy dearest" type of book detailing Bing's abusive behavior towards his family and his alcholism. So yeah, go figure.

20. Carol -
I heard "Mary did you know" for the first time today, loved it. Could anyone tell me the Artist. Also my very favorite is Paul McCartney's "SO THIS IS CHRISTMAS"
