The Number One Songs of 2008

Posted Sat Dec 6, 2008 1:00pm PST by Robert of the Radish in The Y! Music Playlist Blog

Starting this week I'll be publishing my top 100 album picks for 2008. I don't select the best albums of the year based on sales or popularity, but instead on what stood out for me personally. So before I get started on that, I wanted to recap the most popular songs of 2008.

The 14 songs in this playlist are the tracks that hit the number one spot on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart in 2008. So these were truly the most popular recordings of the year as measured by sales and airplay.

The exact components that determine a songs position on the Hot 100 chart includes:

-Airplay: Billboard monitors about 1000 radio stations in the United States 24 hours a day 7 days a week

-Singles Sales: Billboard uses SoundScan reports on physical sales of the song

-Digital Sales: Also tracked by SoundScan, digital sales have been included in a song's sales total since 2003

If you're a mainstream music fan you'll be familiar with all of these songs, and it's a good recap of the year. However, if you shun MTV and mainstream radio, but instead discover new music via blogs and non-traditional sources, these songs may be completely foreign to you. This is your chance to see what the masses have been fawning over.

music is like candy, eventually you have to throw the rappers away.

Er..I'm ignorant on what is "popular"...but shouldnt MIA be here?

As for the rest of you...Radish said it was the year's most popular songs, so stop complaining that your bands arent up there.

BTW Robert, can't wait to see your top 100 albums list. I hope it will show some good (hopefully bands I missed) music.

First of all if all these artists reached #1 at some point this year they must be doing something right. I have heard of every one of them. I can't say if most are any good because I don't listen to rap or top 40. I have seen videos of Leona Lewis and Rihanna with both sounding very good. The only one I really like is Coldplay.

k songs are ok and i agree with D33PPURPLE (MIA should be on the list and so should jordan sparks) the songs are ok kinda

why are those songs on the top list???
cause Billboard top list is based on how often they are played on radio!! lol

12. Squirrel -
wow im happy to say ive never herd any of these songs, or half of the artists...

THese songs are awful, I guess you could say "MASS DOES NOT MAKE RIGHT", keep monitoring.

America is getting really sucky nowadays when it comes to music.

Make room for people who do better music. I'm sick of seeing Beyonce. She's too overrated and her Single Ladies and If I Were A Boy were not very good tracks, just mediocre, nothing wow.
