Top 10 "Zero" Songs

Posted Fri Jan 16, 2009 5:55pm PST by Robert of the Radish in The Y! Music Playlist Blog

The number "0" can be used by a songwriter to represent many things. It can be a starting point, as in "0 to 60", it can represent the absence of love or possessions, or it can represent a human failure, as in "he's a zero!"

For this playlist I ran a query on the word "zero" and had well over 6,000 songs returned. As I combed though them I thought it would be interesting to select the very best songs that use "zero" as an artistic device.  This playlist is the result.

As you will hear, it turned out to be an eclectic, but mysteriously great listen. Especially considering that the only thing holding these songs together is the fact that they use "0" prominently.

So what "zero" songs do you think should have been included? And what number do you think can claim the most great songs?

Top 10 "Zero" Songs

   1. Love Minus Zero/No Limit - Bob Dylan

   2. Saved By Zero - The Fixx

   3. Zero And Blind Terry - Bruce Springsteen

   4. Less Than Zero - Elvis Costello

   5. The New Face Of Zero And One - New Pornographers

2. Dark Dragon -
Good list, this was interesting. And smashing pumpkins song is the best on the list for sure.

3. Redlem -
"Saved by Zero" a forgotten 80's classic and should be #1 on list. Good to see the New Pornographers on the list as well.

4. MattJ -
missing: #1 Zero - Audioslave. One of Tom Morello's most underrated solos and one of Chris Cornell's best ever vocals...why did he ever sell out...sadness

5. 29moons -
My Hero Zero from Schoolhouse Rock!

6. George R -
Missing from list: "Go To Zero" - The Power Station (led by Robert Palmer). This was on the b-side of "Gonna Have a Good Time Tonight" from "The Lost Boys" Soundtrack.

7. BeCcA iS aWsOmE -
kewl list

8. Chris the first -
This list is pretty good, but there is another song that I really that could go here: Less then Zero by Type O Negative.
