Greatest Rock Bands With Real Life Brothers

Posted Tue Jan 27, 2009 4:25pm PST by Robert of the Radish in The Y! Music Playlist Blog

Brothers have a special connection, and when they are raised in a musical family the results can be stunning. While developing skill on an instrument takes years of dedicated solo practice, the ability to produce great band-centered music can only be developed by playing with other human beings.

Siblings have a leg up in this regard, but both brothers and musicians are notorious for fighting, so successful bands that include brothers are not as numerous as one would think. However, for those brothers who have made it in music, the sky's the limit. A smattering of brother-groups have produced numerous timeless classics and this list explores the very best of them.

If you're looking for the Jonas Brothers please check Disney.com -- this list is devoid of manufactured fads.

To make this list each group had to have at least two real life brothers (sorry Doobies), have to be considered rock & roll (sorry Jackson 5), and should have reached the highest levels of respect among rock fans and critics. I have included one track by each group so you can hear the sibling magic for yourself.

Are there any bands that you think should have been included that didn't make the cut?

Hell yeah! awesome list. Pantera is one of the best bands EVER! It's great to see some love for them on yahoo.

Although, you got Dime's brother's name wrong. It's Vinnie Paul Abbott

5. Chris the first -
Oh, and a big thumbs up for including the DeLeo brothers(STP) Both are quite underrated and deserve much more credit. If you ask me they carried Scott Weiland's career on their backs, in some ways they still do.

Dean and Robert have been a huge influence on my guitar playing, especialy in my earlier years (the early to late 90's).

6. DUDE -
Very good list...You overlooked the Robinson brothers (Rich and Chris) from The Black Crowes.

7. DUDE -
OOPS!,,,Sorry,I overlooked the honorable mention...My bad.

8. Charles -

9. MARIA -
Very nice list.

@Chris - Isn't it redundant to put Vinnie Paul Abbott and "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott when you already know they are brothers? If you notice each pairing of brothers has the last name only after the 2nd name. The name isn't wrong smart guy.

11. I'M READY!!!!!!!!! -
Lol!!! Way to rip on the JBs

12. Elton -
What about Sepultura, Max and Igor Cavalera?

13. ramsfan -
Very good list, though I would have also included Dire Straits (Mark and David Knopfler), Blue Oyster Cult (Joe and Al Bouchard), and possibly Styx (based on some good tunes, but a probable exclusion based on "Mr. Roboto")(John and Chuck Panozzo).

14. -
collective Soul (Ed and Dean Roland)

15. Yahoo! Music User -
Charlatans UK (Mark and Rob Collins)

Rob died in a car accident during recording of their fifth album

16. Yahoo! Music User -
more honarable mentions:
Nickelback, Kings of Leon, Good Charlotte

Oh and who can forget
Nelson!!!! LOL

17. Sherbington -
Hey what about Doves, Andy and Jez Williams!

Also Mark and Rob Collins of The Charlatans were not related according to Wikipedia.
