Songs For Saint Patrick's Day

Posted Tue Mar 17, 2009 4:21am PDT by Robert of the Radish in The Y! Music Playlist Blog

Saint Patrick's day, or Lá Fhéile Pádraig in Irish, celebrates the life of the patron saint of Ireland, Saint Patrick, born Maewyn Succat.

It is an official holiday in Ireland and a feast day in the Roman Catholic church, but it has also spread to much of the secular world at large as a day to celebrate all things Irish.

Displaying the color green, parades, Irish food and drink are all important parts of the celebration today, but you can't have a proper St. Paddy's day without Irish music.

For this playlist I have selected 15 excellent Celtic songs for you to enjoy with your green beer today. The list includes both traditional and contemporary Celtic music and will get you in the right state of mind whether you're Irish or not.

Nothing by the Pogues themselves? C'mon! I think I would also add something from Christy Moore, perhaps "The Voyage"?

I love your playlists, by the way, so no offense intended...

2. Gerry -
Excellent list! On a non-Celtic note, my St. Patricks' Day is never complete without hearing Sonny Rollins' version of "How Are Things In Glocca Morra".

3. PinkDolphin -
I'm gonna go out on limb here and throw out a little Dropkick Murphy's and "Kiss Me, I'm ****faced." =)

4. Yahoo! Music User -
I would have included at least one tune by Dropkick Murphys.

5. Nathan I -
Hmmm...so this is how Irish music was before we began listening to Celtic Woman or Celtic Thunder? Why not try songs like these:

HEARTLAND
RAGGLE TAGGLE GYPSY
THE SKY, THE DAWN AND THE SUN
STRINGS OF FIRE
THE BUTTERFLY
SEND ME A SONG
DOWN BY THE SALLEY GARDENS
I DREAMT I DWELT IN MARBLE HALLS
ISLE OF ISINFREE
CARRICKFERGUS

6. Adam -
I've got to say, I would have liked to see some Dropkick Murphys and Flogging Molly in there. You can't tell me Drunken Lullabies won't fit, and and I loved (F)Lannigans ball from Dropkick Murphys last album, featuring Spider Stacy of The Pogues and Ronnie Drew of the Dubliners. The story of a man named Flannigan who won a crapload of money, throws a party, everyone gets hammered and a brawl ensues. CLASSIC!!

7. KeriM -
I like it! Pandora didn't have anything unless you know a specific artist or song.

8. __A_YAHOO_USER__ -
Ya, why no Dropkick Murphys or Flogging Molly? But those omissions aside, decent list.

9. KevinH -
What about "there's no one as Irish as Barac Obama" ?

10. Dara -
Dude..."Irish drinking song" Buck O' Nine! Its funny and always puts me in the mood for a pint!

11. Carol -
for some reason the Irish Pub I go to in Atlanta always plays the Loneliest Unicorn - you know Big alligators and long necked geese...completely choreographed :) Always fun.

I know it's not really a song about Ireland or being Irish, but, any song by Paddy Casey.
