The Who: The Covers

Posted Thu Mar 19, 2009 5:56pm PDT by Robert of the Radish in The Y! Music Playlist Blog

I've never been a huge fan of The Who, but I've never disliked them either. Although there's no denying the power and flawlessness of recordings like Who's Next and Live At Leeds, I've always leaned more to contemporaries like The Rolling Stones and The Kinks.

But what's been my loss over the last couple of decades has recently become my gain.

A few months ago I started listening to, and exploring The Who in more detail. This is in part due to a fantastic live Who Blu-ray disc I picked up called The Who: At Kilburn: 1977 (clip). This live concert got me digging out my old Who albums and listening to songs I never really spent much time with.

One thing I would say about The Who after my rediscovery is this:

"The Who are the best bar band ever -- raw power, and 100% rock & roll."

For this playlist I've collected 20 cover songs as performed by The Who. It includes remakes of songs by their contemporaries like The Kinks, The Rolling Stones and Elton John, as well as cover versions of songs by influences like Bo Diddley, Martha & the Vandellas and James Brown. Maybe it will help you rediscover the band as I have...

It's kinda like seeing the Who at your local pub.

"Young Man's Blues" (Mose Allison) is also an amazing cover by The Who from their Live at Leeds album.

Glad to hear you've come 'round to them. The Who is one of my all time favorite bands!

Cool list - but the Regents are the original artist for "Barbara Ann", releasing it 4 years before the (admittedly most familiar) Beach Boys version.

Now I'm off to listen to all these - thanks for sharing! I myself discovered the 'oo just a few years ago and am wondering where they heck they'd been in my musical upbringing.
