Songs For Getting Older

Posted Tue Mar 31, 2009 4:48pm PDT by Robert of the Radish in The Y! Music Playlist Blog

A good friend of mine recently had a milestone birthday. To celebrate, he hosted a great weekend camping trip with a bunch of friends.

It was kind of surreal because many of us now have families of our own. It doesn't seem so long ago that we were the kids. But here we were -- parents. Time certainly has a way of creeping up on you.

During the camping trip I took a bunch of video and when I went to edit the raw footage I began looking for a light-hearted song about getting older for the soundtrack.

I found a ton of great ones, but settled on the song "Older" by the perpetually witty They Might Be Giants. It was a perfect fit for the video.

If you're throwing a party for a milestone birthday this is a great playlist to start with.

And remember, you can't stop the clock, but you can control what you do with your time while you're here.

I love you for putting SF59 in that playlist. I was really hoping that song would be.

Anyone I know.
How the heck are you?
Hope all is well, and say hi to Gooey and Mellie.

What about the Birthday Party (band)?

Yeah, okay, not really about getting older..

4. DUDE -
Getting older always beats the alternative.....

5. Anne -
"Time" by Pink Floyd to bring the mood down.

And what exactly is the alternative to getting older?

6. Yahoo! Music User -
Hazel Dickens, "Old and in the Way", and Tom Lehrer, "When You are Old and Gray".

7. DUDE -
Dear emeraldbox11....The alternative to getting older is death..Happy now??

8. John -
If you don't mind the language, I would suggest "My S---'s F---ed Up" by Warren Zevon. Great gallows humor.

9. Gerry -
"Old Folks", The Lovin' Spoonful
"Old Fart At Play", Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band (this one narrated by Rockette Morton)
"Old Friends", Simon and Garfunkel
"Old Man", Love
"Little Ole Man (Uptight)", Bill Cosby

Good choice with Tom Lehrer, troy!

12. Ty -
"At least I'm not like all those other old guys", Five Iron Frenzy

13. J.B. -
"Don't Forget Me" by Neko Case. That is a hauntingly beautiful song.

I think I am Going Bald by RUSH

dreamer by Aerosmith would be a good one too

My vote goes to "100 Years" by Five For Fighting.

You know, I thought of another one. I've been looking at a lot of these lists on the web, and the choices are all very good, but the first one I mentioned was not on any of them and neither is this other one. "Cats in the Cradle" by Harry Chapin is as much about getting older as it is about regret. It can touch you on a very deep emotional level, especially if you are a parent.
