Folk Songs For Children

Posted Sun Apr 19, 2009 8:27am PDT by Robert of the Radish in The Y! Music Playlist Blog

Every country has it's own folk song traditions, America included. And there's something special about the songs families sing together that helps bind us together as a nation.

Music can put a smile on the face of even the smallest child, and even parents who do not fancy themselves singers will sing to their children. Some of the very first melodies children learn include "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star", "Row, Row, Row Your Boat", and "Mary Had A Little Lamb, but as children grow they need more.

This playlist includes folk songs that will help children continue with their love of music after "Old MacDonald" has run its course.

Folk songs really are perfect for children. They usually include very strong, but simple melodies, and tell stories through the use of characters that children can identify with -- children's books set to music.

I have fond childhood memories of many of the songs in this playlist. And today I'm passing them on to my children.

What folk songs had the biggest impact on your childhood?

Anything by Ella Jenkins or Pete Seeger, actually - I'm sensing that I'll be headed to iTunes soon to make a new playlist for my own little girl - thanks for the great trip down memory lane, Robert!

5. Gerry -
Rosalie Sorrells' "The Baby Tree", nicely done by Paul Kanter on Jefferson Satrship's BLOWS AGAINST THE EMPIRE.

Interesting list of oldie folks songs for kids. Many of these have interesting melodies but weird, weird lyrics.
