The Rolling Stones: The #1 Hits

Posted Mon Apr 27, 2009 6:34pm PDT by Robert of the Radish in The Y! Music Playlist Blog

The mighty Rolling Stones win the prize for the longest rocking band in the history of the world. They've defied irrelevance, old age and death for decades to make valid rock music with no signs of slowing down. If you're counting, the Rolling Stones were formed 47 years ago. Wow. It's hard to believe any band could continue for this long, especially a band with the hard-living reputation earned by the Rolling Stones. There can be no argument that the Stones are the reigning elders of rock and roll. Over the course of their long career the band has released a boatload of albums. In the first phase of their career albums would be rearranged and repackaged for the U.S., so it's not really fair to count them all as separate albums, so let's just stick with "boatload".

From this boatload of albums the Stones have had their fair share of hit songs. I wanted to create a playlist of their #1s much like the Beatles have done with their hits compilation titled "1".

This playlist includes the 12 Rolling Stones tracks that have reached #1 on the Billboard Pop Singles or Mainstream Rock Tracks charts.

Certainly they've defied old age and death, but to say they've defied irrelevance is a bit of a stretch. I'm probably biased though; I've always thought the Stones sucked.

Did they really only have 12 #1's? Is that UK only or US only? any idea how many UK #1's Status Quo has had? They've been around a lot of years also.
