Songs That Sample Black Sabbath

Posted Wed May 13, 2009 6:29pm PDT by Robert of the Radish in The Y! Music Playlist Blog

There are many iconic bands who've left a mark on rock n' roll. But the ones who really stand out for me are the handful that can claim a branch on the rock n' roll family tree. Great songwriting is a key for longevity, but to become legendary a band needs to develop something unique -- a new sound, something that resonates with people and influences fans to pick up a guitar and start a band of their own. Black Sabbath was one of these bands. Started over 40 years ago, Black Sabbath is considered  one of the very first heavy metal bands, and their sludgy, doom-ridden sound was as unique as anything to come out of the period from which they emerged.

As with most iconic bands, Black Sabbath has inspired untold throngs of musicians, and the influence continues today. With even hip-hop and electronica artists paying homage.

This playlist includes 10 tracks that sample classic Black Sabbath tracks.

What about "6 In The Mornin"?That uses the very opening section of "Black Sabbath".

Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin were the two bands that made me pick up a guitar.

Black Sabbath is perhaps the only band that can claim they were the first band in a music genre. Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, and other hard rock/prog rock bands had a huge influence on metal, and you can argue that you can hear their influence on the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and co.) more than Black Sabbath. But once the genre started getting heavy with Venom and the subsequent thrash, death, and black sub-genres, Black Sabbath's influence is undeniable. And then of course there's doom metal: a sub-genre dedicated to Sabbath imitation (with better artistic results than you might expect).

Anyway, I highly recommend the Paranoid and Master of Reality albums.

Black Sabbath was not only a key factor in my wanting to play guitar and because of their 'Muddy Water' style I had learned that the better the amplifier the more you could do to obtain that same style without distortion boxes.
Black Sabbath was and is a muse for my writing as a writer. I have written several stories and have about half a manuscript written solely under the influence of Black Sabbath music and lyrics. (nothing published, yet)

As far as I am concerned Black Sabbath only released one flop album Forbidden. All other Black Sabbath albums and every song on those albums are worth their weight in GOLD!!!

Why can't they write their own music? There will never be another era like the 60's & 70's

The drum intro for the second song on the list is from Led Zeppelin's When the levee breaks, not a Black Sabbath song.

#9 -- There are multiple samples in "Rhymin' And Stealin'" ya dingbat including: "Sweet Leaf" by Black Sabbath, "When the Levee Breaks" by Led Zeppelin, & "I Fought the Law" by The Clash

Sabath was my first concert experience. I think it was the sabath, bloody sabath tour. Big fun, to be sure. I still love ol geezer butler's bass tracks....Another great cover, was cake's version of war pigs.

Unfortunately, it is rare for a radio station to play any of the classics anymore. Fairys wear boots, anyone?

Oh yeah!!! Black Sabbath really rocks! I have Paranoid on vinyl, and also found the CD. They are the best!

Black Sabbath wa a great relief from the Californa Dreaming of the late sixities and early seventies. Not everyone had parents who earned loads of money and could send thier kids to college so they could goof off and find thierselves. The rest of the blue collar world had to go to work after graduating from high school and the only chance for furthur education would be to join Uncle Sam for a trip to South East Asia, if you mad it back alive then you could appply fr the G.I. loan.
It was good to know that others suffer depression also; loud hard metal music was a great excape. Sabbath stills rules and inffluence the masses.

A list of the songs sampled would have been nice. Just a thought.

To be sure Sabbath changed the landscape of rock forever and will have many rebirths for a long time to come. Like in '87 at my college dorm room, people screamed over Master of Reality blasting and said,"Who is this". Please play that cassette('87) again.
