Songs Inspired By American Idol

Posted Wed May 20, 2009 6:06pm PDT by Robert of the Radish in The Y! Music Playlist Blog

It's no secret that I'm not an American Idol fan. In fact, I'd rather remove my scrotum with a rusty potato peeler than watch a whole season of the show. If you're a fan (and I know there's a gazillion of you) make sure to check out Lyndsey Parker's Yahoo Music blog. She's a great writer and has the full scoop for Idol fans. If you're not a fan of American Idol, continue reading... Ok, now don't get me wrong. I have nothing against the performers I've seen on American Idol. They have fine voices, and in many cases they're fine performers, but to me that's the problem with American Idol. It focuses completely on the obvious. There are millions of people with great voices. You need more to impress me.

For starters, how about showing me you have spent the years required to actually master an instrument? And more importantly, how about writing some songs yourself instead of just remaking the work of others, or relying on songwriters? In my world it's the band that rules. A group of individuals who learn how to read each other musically, and develop a unique sound born of the individual characteristics that each member brings to the table. Combine this with a great songwriter AND a great voice and you've got something.

If you love American Idol, that's cool. After all, I can't condemn the masses for being attracted to super-glossy, manufactured pop. But like fish attracted to a plastic worm, at some point they'll realize that what they just swallowed was a poor substitute for the real thing.

So yeah, I could take the easy route and create a playlist of the songs that Idol contestants sang on the show. If I did, the blog would have a great chance of making the Yahoo front page where it would proceed to get a million readers, but instead I give you this. A playlist of songs inspired by American Idol, and not in a good way.

Umm.... I disagree!I love American Idol! and btw Kris was amazing last night but, how would u know? YOUDONTWATCH IT

3. V -
I agree with you that they should give them more of an opportunity to expand their talent. It would be more interesting and to see if they actually can do more then just sing.

4. Zak S -
You are correct, of course, about what you said, but the fact is that if you WIN American Idol, 19 Management pretty much owns your soul and you get very little to no creative control over your album. Chris Daughtry has gone on with his band, and they are making their own music. So, it's really American Idol's fault, not the contestants.

5. Marilyn -
How would YOU know- You don't even watch the show!!!!!!!!! You need to really tune into the show and you'll realize that people like Adam (even though I liked Kris better) have got heck of a lot of talent and if the preformers on Amnerican idol don't impress you, I don't know what will.

6. mike c -
Quit bashing the kid. He won fair and square. Everybody is talking about the other singer, but it's over. Lets get behind the winner and support him.

7. Dorea -
Sounds like you need to be talking to Simon Fuller, the founder of American Idol. The contestants has to select a song off the playlist. That is why it is so important that the contestants try to put their own flare into the song or it would be karaoke.

I think Kara needs to be dropped. I didn't like her at all during the show. I couldn't stand her hunched shoulders and her animated expressions. I hated the song she co-wrote. But the battle with the bikini girl was funny, so maybe she should be a comedian.

I think this is my last time watching American Idol.

I can't stand this useless and biased piece of crap show myself but to say I'd rather remove my scrotum with a rusty potato peeler than watch a whole season of the show, uuuugggghhhh!!!!, that's serious. Have a nice and safe Memorial Day weekend to you Radish and everyone else out there.

12. Mindy M -
If you don't like the show then don't watch it, it's that simple. I think it has lauched alot of careers. Look at Jennifer Hudson, Chris Daughtry, David Cook, Kelly Clarkson etc. You don't have to win in order to be helped by this show.

I'm not really a die-hard fan of AI but I have come to appreciate the show so far. I agree with you on the idea of giving the contestants more challenge to show their artistry in playing instrument or music writing. But I guess the best thing the show can offer so far is to encourage the contestants to sing the songs in their own way. After all, this is not like a factory of future music legends but rather a stepping for those who believe they have something to offer the world whether as a vocalist to a band, singer, or even as a songwriter. It's obviously all up to us if we find their piece of art worth supporting. Nonetheless, I have total respect for the contestants of the show and also the people behind it. Let's face the fact that entertainment and profit is more likely behind their minds when they thought of putting this massive show up. Let's just wish the winners and the runners up a great future ahead of them. We are in no position to question their passion for music even if it's shown through AI which other people may find superficial.

You guys are so right I can't stand this crap their not fair the best singer never win not since Ruben S. and Fanesia. I stop really watching American Idol.

AMEN MR. RADISH!
Totally agree with you Robert, American Idol merely manufactures more singers devoid of real talent to sell to the masses who are unable to comprehend real music, literature and the like. I believe the term for this music, according to George Orwell's "1984" is prolefeed.(and yes, prolefeed is one word; if you don't know about newspeak, look it up, or, better yet, read the book.)
Also, Mindy M, maybe you don't have to win the show to get famous. It might have something to do with being seen by millions each night who dig the kind of manufactured and devoid of soul music that this corporation and people are creating.

16. Yahoo! Music User -
I don't enjoy American Idol as much as SOME people do... but Adam Lambert should have won....
But Kris can suck it cuz Adam's gonna be huge. I can tell.

17. Yahoo! Music User -
I feel rejected!!!! American Idol ROCKS - you just aren't smart enough to watch it and see how amazing it is!

18. Yahoo! Music User -
i alway watch american idol

19. Carol A -
adam lambert is the best singer and performer that american idol has ever had and maybe ever will

AP
Mon Dec 7, 2009 6:44am PST

AP - As far as one-hit wonders go, Daniel Powter is king of them all — for this decade, at least. Powter, whose hit "Bad Day" reigned on top of the Billboard pop charts for five weeks in 2006, was named as the de… More »
