The 80s Preservation Society Playlist: Volume 1

Posted Thu May 21, 2009 5:55pm PDT by Robert of the Radish in The Y! Music Playlist Blog

The summer before my freshman year in high school my parents gave me a boom box and I remember it vividly. It was a Panasonic, silver & black and had a slow cassette eject function that was rad for the time. I discovered tons of music on that boom box via the local college radio station and the hundreds of cassette tapes that I bought with every dollar I could scrape up. It was my most prized possession all through high school. Anyway, the cassette tapes and the boom box are now long gone, but I started thinking about the cassettes I had in my collection. Many of them I've not heard in over a decade and they tend to be overlooked in the majority of 80s-centric playlists I've come across on the Internet. So I thought I would start creating my own.

Most good 80s playlists don't miss the big one hit wonders like Falco and A Flock Of Seagulls, bands that became huge hits like U2 and Duran Duran, and hair band sensations like Poison and Dokken. But I long for those songs that are not so obvious.

This playlist includes songs from albums that I wore out in the 80s, and that I don't see being passed on to the younger generation.

If you like 80s music you need to listen to each song in this list that you haven't heard before. No exceptions.

Do tell me what you think of any song you haven't heard previously, I would love to hear what a fresh pair of ears thinks, and what are your suggestions for Volume 2?
