U2 Covers

Posted Wed Jun 10, 2009 6:49pm PDT by Robert of the Radish in The Y! Music Playlist Blog

Music writers can be a little hard on U2 because they're, well... rock stars. The band was formed way back in 1976 and has been on top for decades. They've sold over 145 million records and have won 22 Grammy awards. Any band that reaches this level of success in the music business is bound to attract some jealousy and consternation. But to me personally, U2 will always be one of the most important. I grew up with their music in the 1980s, a decade that saw the band release a steady stream of flawless albums, with a sound that was completely unique. Pick up any U2 album from their 1980 debut Boy through their 1991 release Achtung Baby and tell me it's not great. You can't.

For this playlist I've collected 15 U2 songs as covered by a wide variety of different artists. Their influence permeates into all genres and will no doubt continue for some time.

What about Shinedowns cover of the song One?? It is pretty damn good!!

Brennan K, I don't know if you noticed, but Rob tries to step outside the mainstream and introduce you to the more obscure bands out there.

Shinedown does not fit what the Radish listens to, or really the rest of this list.

Since I think that the best U2 song is "New Year's Day" I could not think of anyone covering that song. Well granted it is on this list but that Pickin On version makes my skin crawl as the banjo is soooooo out of place.

Hey redlem, my favorite covers are those that rebuild a song in a completly new genre, the Pickin' On series does this with blugrass. I think it's very cool -- I wouldn't say it's as good as the original, but that's not the point.

5. Sean -
Although it's fairly mainstream, the Mary J. Blige verion of "one" is incredible - maybe better than the original?

Cool list - I'll add Hanson's cover of "In A Little While" to here - a bit rote, but great harmonies.

Okay, no disrespect... but... there are a quite a few reasonable omissions:
Bullet the Blue Sky-- P.O.D.
Where the Street Have No Name: Chris Tomlin
Love is Blindness: Sixpence None the Richer
Sunday Bloody Sunday: Pillar
Gloria: Audio Adrenaline
Mysterious Ways: TobyMac
When Love Comes to Town: Todd Agnew
Most of these are from the "In the Name of Love: Artists United for Africa" Tribute Album the proceeds from which go to World Vision's AIDS Relief program... Check It out!!!

I said 20 years ago that u2 was the best band in the world today and history has proven me right. Now if I can convince everyone about how under rated depeche mode is.

No matter how good some covers may be, I will only ever appreciate U2's music when it is done by U2......
U2 IS THE GREATEST BAND EVER AND ALWAYS WILL BE NO ONE CAN COMPARE TO THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Negativland did an amazing version of 'I still haven't found what I'm looking for.' Too bad U2 has no sense of humor.
