10 Most Tragic Music Icon Deaths

Posted Sun Jun 28, 2009 7:16pm PDT by Robert of the Radish in The Y! Music Playlist Blog

Every death is a tragedy, but in the world of music when an icon dies too young, it sends reverberations throughout the whole world. We saw it this week with the death of Michael Jackson at the age of 50. Those who have reached the pinnacle of success in the music business always see an outpouring of sympathy when they die because of the sheer number of fans they leave behind. But there is more to it. It also reminds us all that life is short and all the money and fame in the world won't stop death. In the most tragic cases it also proves that money and fame cannot buy happiness. To the contrary, sometimes the star simply cannot deal with the trappings of fame and self-destructs. For this playlist I've selected what I feel are the 10 most tragic music icon deaths. These are all artists who have reached millions of people with their music, but died much too young under tragic circumstances.

May they all rest in peace and may their deaths remind the stars of the future that they too are only human.

No disrespect to Elvis, Buddy Holly or John Lennon but there's no other music icons death that has had an effect on the WORLD like the passing of Michael Jackson and never will be. You've got to be chiefing on some of the sweetest cheeba to even make such an asinine statement. Its people who don't even know who Buddy Holly is let alone a song from the man...where is 2Pac, Sam Cooke, Bob Marley? You really put Kurt Cobain over those (3) I just named? You've got to be on the same stuff Cobain AND Courtney Love was on. You screwed this list up with ya biased opinion mane, you're a loser!

Elvis Jimi Hendrix Jim Morrison Buddy Holly Marvin Gaye Kurt Cobain Michael Jackson.

Most of the top guys may have been drug addicts, but at least they did not molest children.

The bottom line is that life is so precious you better know how you will spend eternity! Happiness on earth is the key,,,,,Not Money!

I can't argue with the list. They were all music Icons at the time of their respective and untimely deaths. Those who have mentioned Tupac Shakur, Bob Marley, Billie Holliday and John Bonham of Led Zeppelin get high marks from me.
With all due respect, Aaliyah, Left Eye of TLC, Ritchie Valens, Notorious B.I.G, and all the other talented musicians and singers were not icons. Having said that, we can be thankful for the music they left behind. They are and always will be missed.
One music icon not mentioned by anyone who died before her time was Patsy Cline. I'm not a huge fan of Country music, but I do enjoy her songs and appreciate her talent and legacy.

You cant name all of the great any death is tragic no matter who it is. Remember that. When someone dies suddenly all that love them hurt. You cant put a name nor number on them.

Why on earth are people so biased. Everyone is blurting out names. But no one states a fact as to why they should be on the list. I love me some BIG and Tupac by how on earth were they ICONS? They were awesome lyricist but I'm trying to comprehend on how they were set apart from other people on this list? And Aaliyah? Get the heck out of here. She made like 2 ok albums. Yeah all their deaths were sad. But never were they ICONS. In music? No, In their genre maybe. But as a whole in music hell no. Bob Marley I would have to say is arguable. But as for the bums spitting out Selena and random tom dick and harries who they liked. They are not ICONS. Maybe if they lasted more than 2 to 5 years in the business they would have. But none of them made significant music. Most of them weren't recognized til after they died. Just like now people cherishing MJ's music. No one had any good comments for him when he was in court. Sadness of human perception. I would say rest in peace. But there is nothing but peace after your put to rest. Sad he is gone. But glad he doesn't have to deal with the Trauma we get to keep enduring.

Ah, STEVIE RAY VAUGHN...heLLO?????!!!!!

116. Jessica -
Helen, It is Music...Edgar Alan Poe doesn't fit in that categorie

117. Anita -
hey great list above but where is Luther Van dross a house is not a home and dance with my father. That man could sing!!

118. Yahoo! Music User -
Freddie Mercury should replace Janis Joplin. Drug overdose deaths among 60's muscians were a dime a dozen. Freddie revealed he had AIDS so soon before he died.

Maybe the list should've been top 100!!
That way you could include Sonny Bono!!

120. Goddess -
Aaliyah, Sam Cook and Marvin Gaye should be on the list.

I agree that people who had terminal illnesses would not because it was an expected death.
