The Top 20 Most Embarrassing Songs of the 80s

Posted Tue Jun 30, 2009 4:35pm PDT by Robert of the Radish in The Y! Music Playlist Blog

As someone who listens to a ton of music, I can say with high confidence that every decade has created its fair share of incredible and timeless music. The 80s were no exception. However, on the flip side, every decade also has its fair share of horrible, embarrassing music. And again, the 80s were no exception. I've run into a lot of people who say things like "the 80s sucked for music" or "there was no good music in the 90s". This is a false argument based on the individual's recollection of that particular decade, and the perception is usually formed by what was popular at the time. And as we know, what's the most popular does not usually correspond to the highest quality. I loved the music of the 80s, and the decade saw many new buds form that would become strong branches on the popular music tree. Everything from the emergence of a vital American punk scene, the birth of hip-hop, they evolution of college radio and new wave, and excellent growth in electronica, R&B and funk.

But for this playlist I've picked the 20 biggest losers. Songs that cause people to say, "the 80s sucked!" These are the culprits -- the songs that, when we hear them today, make us shake our heads in disbelief and turn us red with embarrassment.

I'll be the first to admit that I owned some of these, but I'll never tell you which.

What do you think is the most embarrassing song of the 1980s?

Every Rose has it's thorn - What's so embarrassing about that? probably because the lyrics are a lot better than the other songs of Poison, and most of the Popular songs being churned out today. Nos 2, 16, and 17, were once dance tracks at dance halls (bet you never danced to these). Nothing embarassing for me... The other Nos? - I guess so, you're right.

Anything by Phil Collins should be on this list.

Home Sweet Home--Motley Crue
Wanted Dead or Alive--Bon Jovi
When Children Cry--White Lion
Honestly--Stryper
Glory of Love--Peter Cetera
Everything I Do, I Do For You--Bryan Adams

23. Jennifer -
I can think of way worse than whats on the list. Some of those that are listed are really not that bad!

24. JC L -
Gee! I actually liked some of those. So what's wrong with me? There's a lot of really awful junk that never made your list.

25. Shequita -
phil collins has better taste than any of your music bud. the music today SUCKS SO BAD. the music i'm hearing so far is not worth the money or time. beyonce is getting very dull if you ask me

26. john -
All those songs you put on the list really sucked. However, there are so many more that were just as bad if not worst that you didn't mention. The 80's songs bit the bag!!!

Boy, I hit 50%! The ones I will actually admit to owning:

Mickey - Toni Basil
Maniac - Michael Sembello
I Love A Rainy Night - Eddie Rabbitt
Kokomo - The Beach Boys
We Built This City - Jefferson Starship (this is the only one I will apologize for)
Dancing On The Ceiling - Lionel Richie
Heartbeat - Don Johnson
Puttin' On The Ritz - Taco
Sussudio - Phil Collins
Cherry Pie - Warrant

I also couldn't help but notice a lack of Survivor - they were TERRIBLE as well as embarrassing. I was also surprised not to see Dead Or Alive, Kajagoogoo, or "The Reflex" by Duran Duran (the rest of their stuff is passable, but this...not so much).

28. A- Linds -
Robert of the Radish- you need to go back and look through the music of the 80's because some of these just are not top 20 worst material...

29. d -
I don't buy Radish's selective argument. Yes, embarassing pieces were there, but certaily not by icons like Lionel Richie,Phil Collins and Rick Astley. They know what their adiences want. There's more to selling albums than just enjoying an available microphone and guitar. FYI, Sussudio, alongside Groovy kinda love sold over 17 million copies! They sold millions my brother, n sadly, their shelves are still being devoured!

ma bad!

Tru dat A-Linds! Tru dat!

The song and album "Cherry Pie" was released in 1990 not the 80's dumbass! Do your research.

Simply Red?

Spandau Ballet?

37. Corky -
Not much actual rock n' roll anymore. It's all been just pop n slop since the 70's. The Rolling Stones (despite their age) are true rockers. Even the great hair bands of the 80's can't play real R&B rock. To get back to the subject, I'd have to agree with most of the list, and add Walking on Sunshine to it.

38. D-rawk -
hands down i think rick astley should be number one. every time that song comes on u just have to shake your head in shame. especially at the jerks who post family guy clips on youtube and put the never gonna give you up video instead as a sick joke.

39. DrQnzl -
Certainly you gotta add Madonna Ciccone's HORRIBLE "Vogue" to this list. Now, every Madonna "song" blows large and fish-stinky chunks due to her inability to sing on key, but this wretched piece of overproduced crap also spawned an equally repugnant dance craze. Yecch!

40. EarthBoundMisfit -
some of those tunes are not too bad.
Ican't believe that you left off the following
1 Soft Cell - Tainted Love
2 The Clash - Should I Stay or Should I Go Now?
3 Wham - Wake Me Up
4 Culture Club - Karma Chameleon
5 Michael Jackson - Leave Me Alone
6 Rick Astley - Together Forever
7 Phil Collins - a Groovy Kind of Love
8 Electronic - Patience of a Saint
9 Wall of Voodoo - Mexican Radio
10 Duran Duran - Wild Boys
