Cover Chain Volume 1

Posted Thu Jul 9, 2009 7:39pm PDT by Robert of the Radish in The Y! Music Playlist Blog

Cover chain playlists can be time consuming, but I love to create them when I have some free time to spend. A cover chain playlist is simply a list of songs where each track is a cover version of a song originally performed by the artist next in the list. It's a great way to connect music and check out some quality remakes at the same time. One thing I've found interesting in creating cover chain lists is that Robert Johnson is always the last in the chain. It makes sense considering that he's the starting point of recorded music as it pertains to popular music. You can start a cover chain with any R&B, funk, pop or rock band and somehow you will always end up with Robert Johnson.

Try your own and see what you come up with.

For this list I began with a Son Volt cover by The Flood and ended up with (you guessed it) a Robert Johnson cover as performed by Howlin' Wolf. Every track in between is a link in cover chain volume 1.
