The Very Best Songs of 1985

Posted Fri Jul 10, 2009 6:46pm PDT by Robert of the Radish in The Y! Music Playlist Blog

For this playlist I have selected 30 of the very best songs released in the US circa 1985. Included are many popular music genres and I've disregarded the charts. This is not a playlist of top 40 hits. However, that's not to say you won't find popular hits in the list. Some bands that reached the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1985 are here, including Tears For Fears & Dire Straits, but many chart-toppers are not. (Sorry Madonna, Huey Lewis, Bryan Adams, Wham! & Foreigner) The idea was to throw out manufactured and forgettable pop and select only the very best tracks, regardless of sales or popularity. Many of the bands on the list are legends in some circles, but never reached stadium-filling levels of success.

The key here is the quality of the SONG. Obviously, many great tracks are not included, but if you ask me, this is a fine representation of the very best of what 1985 had to offer. I have not ordered the songs as most of them are equal in my eyes.

What would you add to the list?

Good list! I'm working on doing my own decade/year soundtracks - mainly songs that would mean more to me than anyone else, but still fun to do. Music is almost like scent. You can hear a song and be right back in the moment of when you first heard it (or at least when you first heard it and something memorable was going on at the same time). Doesn't even have to be good. I have "Rumors" from 1986 by Timex Social Club on my 1986 soundtrack. :-)

Well Robert, commendable list as always when you chose the tracks. But I see a deviation from your regular tastes. I think this list is fantastic as it showcases the best of the 1980's behind the scenes or the very best in "pop" music.

Great great list, full of variety.

Believe it or not I have that Tears for Fears album and the Sade album that "Smooth Operator" is on, both on record. I took them from my dad's record collection, lol.

I think Slayer's "At Dawn They Sleep" deserves to be on this list too, lol.

4. Raider7534 -
why is the whiny face song "SHOUT" on this list.I agree with the rest of the list though.

5. Paul L -
Loved Tears for Fears, and SHOUT is a great song. I remember most of these songs, and some I have never heard of but it doesn't mean they're good. Great list!

6. Redlem -
Interesting list. Not sure about some of the songs but that is more personal taste than anything.

Would I Lie to You- Eurythmics would of been a nice inclusion.

7. rock lobster -
Predictable and obviously skewed towards the alternative/college radio stuff. #1 really should be Into the Groove by Madonna. She owned 1985.

8. Yahoo! Music User -
rock lobster, you think this list is"predictable", but your choice is "Madonna"?
LOL! Good thing you're not a blogger with taste like that.

9. rock lobster -
Ha! Yeah, good thing I'm not a pretentious blogger! ooh. burn!

10. Mathew J -
WOW! Thanks for including SRV!

11. Yahoo! Music User -
How is Dire Straits, LL Cool J, SRV, Sade, John Fogherty, Prince, John Mellencamp, Sting, Stevie Wonder and Rush "obviously skewed towards the alternative/college radio stuff"?
rock lobster, you're an idiot.

12. Karen -
The only one I'd take out is the droney "Smoooooth Operatahhhh". I would replace it with "Talk To Me" by Stevie Nicks (and definitely not by anything by Madonna).

13. Kenny -
Great list.

14. Ken -
how about The Cult's "She Sells Sanctuary", Motley Crue's "Home Sweet Home" or Ratt "Round and Round"

OK music snobs flame away

15. Yahoo! Music User -
Missing some R&B hits. Try "Fresh", "Rock Me Tonight", "Saving All My Love For You", "Nightshift", "Rhythm of the Night", "Oh Sheila" and "Missing You"

16. nopast68 -
There are some really good songs here.....very impressed that you put Rush on this list. Some of the choices I have never heard of or just don't get.

17. Hyena -
What About "Lay it Down" by RATT, Or "I'll see the Light Tonight" By Yngwie Malmsteen?

18. John -
Ken, Ratt's "Round and round" was in 1984

19. Norma -
Great list!... However, I must admit with you tlane99 on the missing R&B hits...

20. MC -
SCRITTI POLITTI.....PERFECT WAY.....THE GREATEST SONG OF 85...WITHOUT ALL THE CHEESE!!!!!
