Top 10 Songs Inspired By Nursery Rhymes

Posted Tue Jul 28, 2009 7:33pm PDT by Robert of the Radish in The Y! Music Playlist Blog

Many of the nursery rhymes that children grow up with have origins that are hundreds of years old. A good number of them were formed to be an expression of some political or news event of the time. Since freedom of expression was not always welcome by the king, short rhymes were sometimes used to show dissent subtly, without putting your life at risk. The most memorable of these short rhymes were passed down from generation to generation and many have become disconnected from their original meaning. Since almost all children grow up learning nursery rhymes at some point during their upbringing, it's no surprise that they hold a place in the psyche of the musician. For this playlist I have selected what I feel are the 10 best examples of songs inspired by nursery rhymes. I'm certainly missing a bunch of worthy songs, so what would you add, and what would you remove?

You missed a great song by Johnny Preston which was on the charts 15 weeks and peaked at #7 in 1960 - "The Cradle of Love."

Well, rock-a-bye baby, in the treetop
When the wind blows the cradle will rock
So rock-a-bye baby, in the treetop
When the wind blows, mmm

Well, Jack be nimble, Jack be quick
Jack jumped over the candlestick
He jumped so high up above
He landed in the cradle of love

Well, rock-a-bye baby, in the treetop
When the wind blows the cradle will rock
So rock-a-bye baby, in the treetop
When the wind blows, mmm

Hi diddle diddle, the cat and the fiddle
The cow jumped over the moon
And on the way down she met a turtle dove
Said "Let's go rockin' in the cradle of love"

Well, rock-a-bye baby, in the treetop
When the wind blows the cradle will rock
So rock-a-bye baby, in the treetop
When the wind blows, mmm

Jack and Jill went up the hill
To get a pail of water
Jack fell for Jill, gave her a shove
They fell into the cradle of love

Well, rock-a-bye baby, in the treetop
When the wind blows the cradle will rock
So rock-a-bye baby, in the treetop
When the wind blows, mmm

I enjoyed the rhymes since I can still remember most of them.
There are also alot of songs I cant get out of my mind like;
You You You, Let Me Call You Sweetheart, Ghost Riders In The Sky, Blue Moon, Eighteen Tons, Yellow Ribbon, Rainbow Around The Colorado, Mexicalli Rose, Tie A Ribbon Round The Old Oak Tree and more. Some commets made were diparaging about your listing of rhymes but I liked them.

What about the remake of Ears Hang Low by Jibbs called Does Your Chain Hang Low...

Do your chain hang low
Do it wobble to the floor
Do it shine in the light
Is it platinum is it gold
Could you throw it over your shoulder
Is it hot or is it cold
Do your chain hang low!!

15. Aubrey -
hmmmm facinating

WTF! you forgot "Shoots and Ladders" by Korn. That song is soaked in nursery rhymes.

And I'm pretty sure SRV's version of "Mary..." was written by Buddy Guy.
