The official "New Wave Sissy Boy 80s Hits You Were Afraid To Admit You Liked In High School" playlist

Posted Sun Mar 16, 2008 1:04pm PDT by Robert of the Radish in The Y! Music Playlist Blog

I published my first playlist to the web almost 4 years ago on June 12, 2004. And this is the very same list which kicked off a playlisting obsession for me.

When I was in grade school during the late 1970's classic rock bands like The Rolling Stones, AC/DC and Led Zeppelin ruled the hallways. Tough guys wore black concert t-shirts looking to pick a fight with anyone who had the slightest propensity toward disco -- another major pop genre of the time.

Disco was eventually slayed by rock & roll and no one dared admit owning a Village People or Gloria Gaynor album, although almost everyone did.

Then the 80's came and with them came "new wave", a genre that was neither outright ridiculed by the rock & roll set, nor embraced. But a new invention called cable television gave MTV an opportunity to bypass previous methods of getting music out to the masses and new wave took off.

However, many of us who were raised on the classic rock or first wave punk of the 1970's had trouble admitting that we were attracted to the music of Culture Club, Kajagoogoo or Wham!

But we were...

This is the ultimate 80's new wave guilty pleasures playlist. All the sissy boy hits we secretly loved in high school, but were never man enough to admit until grunge killed pop metal.

Boy, that brought back a great time! I love those songs and groups. I remember I use to get picked on for liking the Go-Go's, my ultimate fav '80's group(I still love them and see them when I can). I miss the old time MTV when it use to be a real music channel. I don't miss my big hair or side ponytails though.

I love this entire list, and I am not afraid to say it. I do think Foreigner should be on there, but that is pretty cheesy 80's.

Be ashame..? The 80's were the best decade in my opinion for music...! i knew it then i know it now..it was a super decade for music in general.....even todays kids love the 80's

And here I was thinking I was the only one who liked "Save a Prayer" by Duran Duran. I actually bought the sheet music and learned to play that song on guitar.

And "If you Leave" was my favorite 80's song, from my favorite 80's soundtrack - Pretty in Pink.

Sure there are more popular songs on this list. But for me in the 80's "popular" wasn't "cool".

OMG - this WAS the day. I graduated high school in 1985 & this was the music. We already had a 20 yr class reunion & I was in charge of the CD list & these were all on the list. I have CDs of these along with some 45s & cassettes - WONDERFUL !!
Thx for the memories AGAIN

Love 80's music and I have never been afraid to admit it; on the contrary, very proud of it!

The 80's ROCKED......I loved them then and I love them even more now...I wish we could bring those times back again....Great friends.....awesome tunes.....good times....who could ask for anything more?

154. Missy -
I love the 80's. These are all good songs. 80's graduates have no more reason to be embarrassed than any other decade. 80's rule

155. maria -
Are you kidding? I love these songs, and listen to them still. I don't care what anyone has to say; in the 80's you had a huge assortment of music to choose from. Punk, New Wave, Metal, Rock, etc., not like a lot of today's "cookie cutter" wanna-be's. The 80's rocked and still do, remember Madonna and U2 started out then!

great songs, great times!

I have all these songs on my Ipod...those were the good ol'days. Love them, always will, no music can compare to that..music now is awful...

158. -
80's kid and proud of it......own everyone of these........but now I have a question..... Belinda Carlisle?.. where is she?... Heaven is a place on earth and who could for get.. I get weak.. I mean cmon.. both #1's on billboard.. the only 80's guy I hated and yes I am sure you will yell at me for it.. culture club.. I hated Charma Chameleon even when it came out... beyond that.. good music set.

159. TeresaM -
I have all those and more in my iPod; great treadmill music from the best years of my life!!! Rock on 80's!

160. peachyone -
