-Elvis Presley becomes Private #53310761 in the United States Army
-The Belgian comics magazine Le Journal de Spirou publishes the first Smurfs cartoon
-NASA is formed by the National Aeronautics and Space Act
-Grandmaster Flash, Ice-T, Madonna, Belinda Carlisle, Michael Jackson, Thomas Dolby, D. Boon, Prince, Jello Biafra, Nikki Sixx, Kate Bush and Mary Chapin Carpenter are born
