666 is an interesting number for many reasons. For one, if you write 666 in Roman numerals you will see that it contains the first five Roman numerals in descending order. i.e.:DCLXVI (D = 500, C = 100, L = 50, X = 10, V = 5, I = 1)= 666. It is also the sum of the first 36 numbers. i.e.:(1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8+9+10+11+12 etc. to + 36) = 666. And if you're a math dork, you may also know that 666 is an abundant number, a repdigit, a Smith number and can be written in binary as "1010011010".
There are very few people alive today who would be interested in the above information, but if you throw in some satanic imagery and an electric guitar you get a formula that's sold millions of records. 666 has become the ultimate poster boy for satanic metal, psuedo-satanic metal, as well as a fine tool in the hands of a musician with a good sense of satire.
Of course, the reason the dark side of the music business was attracted to 666 in the first place is due to it's mention in the Bible's book of Revelation (Chapter and Verses 13:17-18), which says:
"and that no man should be able to buy or to sell, save he that hath the mark, even the name of the beast or the number of his name. Here is wisdom. He that hath understanding, let him count the number of the beast; for it is the number of a man: and his number is Six hundred and sixty and six."
So what is the "number of the beast"? Will it be a barcode stamped on our foreheads by government? Is it a supernatural mark on the testicles of the antichrist? Or does it represent a person long gone like, as some believe, Adolf Hitler?
