Playlist: The Ladies of the 80s

Posted Sat May 10, 2008 6:38pm PDT by Robert of the Radish in The Y! Music Playlist Blog

The 1980s was a big decade for music. It kicked off with people being fed up with disco and ended after giving birth to hip hop, new wave, pop metal, alternative rock, synth pop, thrash metal, house music and MTV.

MTV became an incredible vehicle for artists to get their music out to the masses in the 80s and ended up making and/or breaking the careers of many. When people think about the music of this decade they undoubtedly think of bands that were played on MTV.

And while much of the spotlight was taken by male-centric bands who dressed like girls, female artists made gigantic contributions to popular music during the decade.

For this playlist I wanted to focus on some of the most influential female musicians to make a mark in the 1980's. So you won't find Michael Jackson, Poison or Run DMC, but you will find 40 artists whose contributions are critically important -- and every one is a female solo artist or a band with a female member.

Hopefully this playlist brings back some great memories while highlighting the contributions of women in music during the 80s.

Please add and any female artists I missed to the comments.

Where is Nina Hagen? One of the greatest and most diverse singers around. With a voice that goes from a demonic Donald Duck to an operetic aria with the greatest ease. She is still putting out music and actively touring the US and Europe to this day. She is still politically out spoken and fighting for great causes too. Look her up on youtube, you'll have a great time!

12. Ash Kill -
While the Divinyls were formed in the 80s, "I Touch Myself" was released in 1991. Great song, but so not an 80s song....

13. Red -
where is cher she is one of the best she should be there 2

14. kRusH35 -
Human League? That's not just a woman but a trio consisting of two females and one male.

How can you forget Olivia Newton-John?!? She was banned from performing in more countries for her Physical album than Madonna for some of her songs. Just a trivia note, both ONJ's Physical album and Madonna's True Blue album were photographed by the late Herb Ritts - look at both cover's side by side ;-)

16. randy d -
what ever ...women dominate the music biz these days...

17. middletonbg -
How great that you included the greatest, most underrated, most under appreciated singer of all time, Sinead O'Connor, on your list...plus Siouxsie Sioux and Cocteau Twins. Fantastic. I think Suzanne Vega or Natalie Merchant of 10,000 Maniacs should also be mentioned.

18. albinocat135 -
there are tons of women in rock... try female fronted metal.. way better than this stuff!

19. Yahoo! Music User -
measure this list against women of the 70's and you'll see the massive negative impact MTV had on the music industry

20. Yahoo! Music User -
Donna Summer's She Works Hard For The Money!!
