The Number One Hits of 1975

Posted Thu May 15, 2008 6:37pm PDT by Robert of the Radish in The Y! Music Playlist Blog

(Play Playlist - Yahoo Music Unlimited)

This playlist contains the songs that made it to the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1975. The Hot 100 ranks singles based on both sales and airplay, so it’s a good measure of the music that was the most popular for a moment in time. If you were alive in 1975 you should be very familiar with of all the tracks in this playlist.  (Please note: this is a list of number one songs, not albums. Where possible I tried to use the original albums on which the songs appeared. If the origianl album was not available in full for streaming on the YMU subscription music service at the time the list was created I pulled the track from a greatest hits, compilation or alternate release)

As you reminisce about 1975 with the help of this playlist you may remember some of the following key events of said year:

-The Vietnam war ends

-The game show Wheel of Fortune debuts on NBC

-The domestic terrorist group The Weather Underground bombs the US state department

-Pink Floyd releases the album Wish You Were Here

-Queen releases the album A Night At The Opera featuring the biggest hit of their career, "Bohemian Rhapsody"

Thanks for this blog...you've caused me to reminisce and recall what I was doing as each of these top songs played on my Panasonic Blue Ball & Chain AM radio... I also remember what it was like to turn on the radio every week and hear NEW song hits, cranked out continually, which became instant classics (and still are, even today!!)
Rock on!!

Ahhhhh 1975. Man how magical life seemed to me back then and even now when I think about it. I was 10 years old, and I was on my bike riding all around the neighborhood. No worrying about tons of traffic at that time. I also had a radio strapped to my bike so I could listen to music while riding. Ha....I also used to tape these certain types of fireworks that acted like tiny rocket when lit. I thought it gave me a small extra boost when going fast. There were some guys who were around 7 to 8 years older than me that lived across the street from me. They tried to convince me that being "hip" meant that I was not cool. But I didn't fall for it. I also remember asking for a 10 speed sometime around then for christmas. I had an all-in-one stereo complete with turntable, 8-track, AM-FM tuner and detachable speakers!
The next year ('76) I bought Boston's first album with lawn mowing money I had earned and I loved how that album sounded. It seemed to me that it sounded better than a lot of the recordings from that time.

and FYI "have you never been mellow" wasn't from the xanadu soundtrack either. xanadu didn't come out til much later.
does anyone truly research this info before they list it as "fact"?!
sheesh.

I listened to all of these and still have most of the vinyl. It was my freshman year of college, I started to date the woman that has been my wife for the last 30 years and I worked full time. Does this bring back the memories!! Thanks

"Xanadu" was released in 1980. "Have You Never Been Mellow" was from the album of the same title.

I love 70s music even though Im only 29. People can make fun of disco all they want but it's hard for me to stay in a bad mood when I hear those tunes.

Way better music in the 1970's.
Something for every taste and genre
